"The Scottish Government said the figure, which remained virtually static since 2005, is equivalent to more than 46 bottles of vodka, 537 pints of beer or 130 bottles of wine. In England and Wales, the total for the same period was 9.7 litres per person."

I'd make a witty comment here but I'm too pissed, I've got some catching up to do.

46 bottles. That's less than one a week. 30 units of alcohol in a bottle, that's 1380 per year. You can drink 28 units a week without the medics getting exited that's 1456 units.

What's the problem?

That's not really a huge amount for a year to be honest. One could easily put away 10+ pints over each weekend, let alone any cheeky pints during the week.

also, i take it that this is an average for those of a legal drinking age only. obviously 12 year olds having this much over a year is a problem, but 16/17 year olds?

When you put it like that, what's wrong with my country! I'd have expected it to be at least double.

Not a big whiskey drinkers then?

eek 46 bottles of vodka, i only manage to go through 3-5 bottles a year.

Plentiful beer consumption makes up for it. wink

Not me either, don't drink.
And I don't know anyone that could do 46 bottles a year without having serious issues!

I could understand if it was someone buying 46 bottles a year, and maybe the household using it, but that'd still be good going.

Doesn't seem a lot for a year - that's less than a
pint and a half of beer a day or just over 10 pints
a week.

One beer with your evening meal, and a couple of social
pints with friends during the week would see you
as an over average drinker.

To me, this sounds like the Guardian running an obedient
piece about how the Scots adopting a minimum price for
alcohol will help change social attitudes up there.

Heaven help them if they have to deal with the Bavarians
- they drink far far more beer than the Scots and it's
only 20p a pint in the supermarkets. I can't remember the
last time I saw a drunk Bavarian.

"Something has to be done" article. The do-gooders have done the smokers, and have a new target.

This is part of the warning labels on alcohol, increased taxes, minimum prices and greater control.

The interesting thing is the Scots consume 2/3 of their alcohol at home, and that is bad, as that is away from government control.

What I don't get, is that when you get over the border, everyone asumes its COMPLETELY different.

So if there is two houses 10 metres away from eachother, seperated by the boarder, does the Scottish one drink more??

Pointless, meaningless 'facts'

That's an average figure, based on all aged 18+

That's mighty impressive.

Not had a drop since the 28th of Dec you cheeky sod!!!

But it does seem a bit extreme (although I have a mate who polishes off a bottle of voddy to himself quite easily...and does this 2 or 3 times a week)

The figures do not tally

article said:
The Scottish Government said the figure, which remained virtually static since 2005, is equivalent to more than 46 bottles of vodka, 537 pints of beer or 130 bottles of wine. In England and Wales, the total for the same period was 9.7 litres per person.
Average weekly sales for Scottish drinkers were 26.5 units per person over the age of 18, equivalent to around 11 pints of beer or three bottles of wine.
In England and Wales, the figure was 21.8, slightly higher than the recommended weekly maximum for a man.
46 bottles is around 35litres, so if in England only 9.7 litres are drunk that is 3.5 times or 350% more consumed in Scotland, yet the units are 26.5 against 21.8 or around 25% more drunk in Scotland.

However I think I have the answer, I read a different article which gave the England/Wales consumption as 9.7 litres of pure alcohol/year, which would be around 24 bottles against the Scots 35 bottles so you don't have as much catching up to do after all. biggrin

realy doesn't seem like big figures ... i know enough people that consume 3 or 4 bottles of Johnny Black every week, plus a few beers and wine.

They have been doing this for decades and still hold down professional jobs with no problem.

Mostly Brits, Kiwi's, Auzzies and Cannnucks mind you hehe
