This is a knee jerk post so look away now!
I have spent the best part of all morning in dire boring meetings to find that my thread entitled 'Katy Perry' has been locked by Herr Hetherington.
I can't believe it. What i consider could have been the thread of 2010 was locked before it even started. Do the mods have no foresight at all?
I was hoping to spend the afternoon chuckling behind my screen reading comments on how i could bag the frisky wench and how best to deal with the minx once caught coupled with the odd (SFW) pic of the beauty.
Instead there is a padlock next to the thread and a Hethrignton storming around with straightened legs.
That is all!!!

Like Tony said if you want to look at pictures of Katy Perry don't repost them here, or you might find you will not be able to access Pistonheads at your place of work.
It may not be you but there are certainly people here who would not be able to contain themselves and push the boundary too far causing the above to happen via various net nanny systems IT Admin depts run.

The thing I'm most surprised about is that it took this long for this thread to appear.
That thread would only end up one way - it is beyong any shadow of a doubt. The way that thread would have ended up is not what we want on PistonHeads. For many reasons; not just that it's a family site, but also because of the very real and apparent problem of PH being put on 3rd party content filters. As FWD mentions above - this may not be a problem for you personally, but it could potentially be a huge problem for many many people.
To answer your question; "Who mods the mods?". Very simple answer; Haymarket do. Haymarket own PistonHeads. Most of us moderators don't work for PH or Haymarket (very few do) however there is constant discussion (and meetings) on many topics to ensure we are towing the party line and that what we do reflects approrpiately to the PH brand.

I'd just like to clarify this slightly, none of the mods work for PH or Haymarket, they do it for the love of the site. There are however a few of the PH staff (Me, Garlick and Stuart mainly) who participate in moderation as well as their other duties but we are not "Moderators" in the normal sense.With regard to who mods the mods, mostly they are self moderating. Any difficult decisions will be discussed amongst the moderators before action is taken, with clarification from PH staff if they request it. From time to time we will make a request for them to crack down on something or allow a bit more leeway somewhere, but most of them have been here since Ted's day and do a very good job without interference from us!

^this^PH is one of the few sites we can get onto at work without bypassing proxy filters and all sorts, this is because they work so hard on moderating it and keeping it clean
OP you have been here 15 months so you must have seen how those threads invariably end up
Oh and FWIW Herr Hetherington (sic) appears to be one of the better mods, allowing the fun up to a point and not really locking things unless they need to
Just accept it for what it is and move along surely, if it had been a car thread then maybe you would have had a point, but otherwise I'm afraid you are fighting a losing battle

Plenty of valid points from both parties. But where is The Pie & Piston? Where is the pub that i can sit down and have a e-drink with my e-mates discussing the pros and cons of Ms Perry.
I understand the reasons why some of these threads are closed and PH certainly doesn't want to be the new 4chan. But there should be a little corner where we can sit down have a pint and admire the barmaids assets without the landlord scowling at us.
Plus it's Katy Perry, for god sake have some heart.

Call me old-fashioned but I thought most people go to work to erm.....work, and not surf internet forums. You can do that on your own time.A lot of people have jobs where limited personal internet usage is allowed, even if it is only during lunch or similar. We'd prefer not to lose their traffic just for the sake of a perving thread or two.

I am not an IT bod which may be why i am surprised that some of these work filters stop you accesing a whole site because of content on a small percentage of threads. Our work uses Dans Guardian which checks each loaded page for content, therefore you could happily browse a site without being blocked untill you loaded a page with content deemed not acceptable for work use.
There was one occasion when i couldn't access a whole site due to an add banner having a jpg with a dodgy name but thats about it.
To summarise my thoughts on moderating the PH. I am not sure if a 'special' area would be a good idea as may be a red rag to a bull for some who post but it would be nice for threads to breath a bit before locking/deleting them.
