Why is a one way flight more expensive than a return

I am booking a one way flight to the US next month (emigrating there).

Cheapest our corporate travel people can find is Delta @ £2,000.

BA, Virgin etc want over £3,000, yet for a return trip only £2,000

Whilst I don't mind flying Delta, would prefer BA however obviously (and rightfuly) wouldn't get authroised to book the more expensive flight.

How can a one way trip be so much more expensive than a return with the same carrier?

Book the round-trip ticket and just don't use the return coupon.

I suggested that to Corporate travel (Amex) and they said that the airline would claim the additional money from them for the unused return flight.

I am surprised anyone would choose to fly BA - they might be on strike...

Virgin Upperclass is better than BA business. Fewer strikes too
