Talking to a guy at Sunoco race fuels at the show. I noticed he was also selling Joe Gibbs racing oils. I took the opportunity to discuss Oils for our type of engine with him.
He stressed that is is very import to have ZDDP additives in any engine that has non-roller valve gear. He went on to say that high detergent oils will tend to conflict with ZDDP additives by basically washing then off! He went on to mention an oil that they produce that as well as the above has an advanced anti corrosion additive for engines that don't run that often. These oils are designed for racing and do not conform to API stds. A quote from him "You can protect your camshaft or you can protect your catalytic converter. If you don't have a catalytic converter then API rated oils are not as good for your engine"
They offer mineral and synthetic versions. I will be using this oil in the future even though I have roller valve gear.

Peter has recommended XP1 for my engine. Slightly scary price assuming a 10 litre change every other trackday.

They quote three different race car types which have wildly different running oil temps and then suggest oils which give the correct viscosity at those temps. I have heard that Ultimas generally run quite cool oil. I am in the process of installing an oil temp sensor for my motec dash so I can see what is going on.

Have spoken to engine builders and race support guys and the advice comes out consistantly. SBC, change the oil every time you use it. LS7, every other time. (I think I recall Gail[AS] also says after every use)
I have 20 outings planned for this year so thats 1700 quids worth of oil. My thoughts are thats its pretty cheap vs the cost of a dead motor.

Rusti I would agree that if an outing is equal to a race meet or thereabouts then oil change as you say. I don't think I could drive my car that hard!
I am interested in the Hot Rod oils which they say are good for @6000 miles or annual oil changes and have more detergent to cope with this.
Other oils are race only and require frequent changes.
They are about to offer the Hot Rod oil in a mineral version in 5 litre cans so price ought to be better.

I do not think that a heavily tuned AS motor will substantially live longer with that many oil changes,
my personal opinion and that of a former VW CEO ( he said the best would be to weld the bonnet for the first 100k)
is that there is a lot of money made with the fear of car owners that if they do not put the most expensive oil at
frequent intervalls THEIR MOTOR WILL DIE. I am pretty sure lots of companies make good money on that fairy tale.

These oils are not to be used in cars with Catalytic Converters. They contain Zinc friction modifiers that will damage a Cat.
All oils used to contain these modifiers but they are not allowed to be added to API certified oils anymore.
These friction modifiers are required in any engine that does not have roller valve gear if it is to survive for a decent amount of time.
These friction modifiers will also help any highly modified/race engine live longer.

Peter Knight has recommended an oil change every 500 miles (this is a track only car with a soon to be 700 hp LS7) though most importantly changing the filter EVERY track day.
Apparently Joe Gibbs has found that changing filters (Peter recommends the AC Delco ones) greatly improves the longevity / oil quality.
Cheap insurance in my view.
