French think US are occupying Haiti
Discussion
So - I saw this in the Torygraph....
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/centrala...
It makes my blood boil that people would see any action the US is taking as anything other than a humanitarian gesture.
I heard on the World Service that the UN recognise that there is a complete crisis there and have asked for help, meanwhile the US have short circuited all the nonsense and just sent everybody the can manage to get there to help the Haitians. I even heard about a US warship becoming a delivery room for a pregnant woman.
What the heck is the US supposed to do? Sit idly by as they see a disaster on their doorstep for fear of being accused of trying to take over, or just send as much help as they possibly can to avoid the death toll being even higher? I think the right thing to do is the latter but maybe they should just sit back and wait for requests the next time a disaster hits so that other countries don't feel that they are taking over or trying to influence other countries.
Wha do you all think?

why are they turning away planes carrying medical supplies.....?
Who are? It seems like the Americans are now operating a "militia police" type of operation in order to prevent the gangs from killing and taking what they want..i.e. protecting the innocent and ensuring that all people have food and water etc..

There are reports that the airport is "full".The infrastructure has been so badly damaged that they cannot unload or re-fuel the aircraft as quickly as they are arriving. Some aircraft are being diverted to the US and the aid is being transferred to ships. Unfortunately, the harbour in Port au Prince is badly damaged, so the ships cannot dock.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but Haiti pre-earthquake, was a lawless s
t hole, where the incredbly poor people were forced to take harsh steps like adding mud/soil to food to bulk it out.
If the US provides stability & improves the quality of life to the people of Haiti, then the French should be celebrating their involvement................

They've had it bad ever since the Duvaliers sadly. The real quandary is going to be, should international aid just happen to get them to the state they were last Monday or should it continue to improve their lot beyond that? Any government that was commiting to that type of construction, as opposed to reconstruction, would want some sort of influence over the type of state they were building.

Yeah, but give the French any opportunity to complain about the US and they will.
They really have changed their tune since they helped the Americans fight off the British to gain independance!.
Well, it's not exactly a one way street is it? Remember "freedom fries" They really have changed their tune since they helped the Americans fight off the British to gain independance!.

French copmplaining about modern colonialisation? Not like they ever colonised anywhere!?!?!, but they still want to have their influence on Africa and the Caribean; although only two weeks ago they wee talking about getting rid of their all overseas "dependencies" as they're no longer profitable but still collect all normal french dole and pensions

They have had to keep the runway fre for Hilary clinton , then Bill and Ban and all the other photo-opportunists to be able to land. They don't really care......
They are all after self promotion for their own political gain.
If they really cared, they stay well clear of Haiti and let the peopl & aid services use the resources to actually help he people...rather than get tied up making sure the Politicians are safe to walk around the disaster area.

The USA has bad history with Haiti; they occupied it from 1915-1934 and continued to rip it off long after...
OTOH the French have been pissed off about Haiti for over 200 years...Wikipedia said:
The native leader Jean-Jacques Dessalines – long an ally and general of Toussaint l'Ouverture – defeated French troops led by Donatien-Marie-Joseph de Vimeur, vicomte de Rochambeau, at the Battle of Vertières. At the end of the double battle for emancipation and independence, former slaves proclaimed the independence of Saint-Domingue on 1 January 1804
I had to question on last nights news, why, exactly, there were US troops deploying with belt fed weapons...? Shotguns and big sticks I can understand, but as well as personal weapons like M4A1'a, there were troops carrying M60 style LMGs. This surely makes it look more like an army of occupation than a relief exercise....?
So maybe there is something to be questioned.
Fekin french should still STFU though.
