Is there any point putting decent single malt in a hip flask, or does it eventually become contaminated? The 'instructions' usually say not to keep spirit in the flask for more than 24 hours, but I take a flask or two away skiing with me.

Whadya fink; just use a blend?

Well thank you but I'm no authority, just an enthusiastic amateur!

I often take a hip flask out walking or when I'm going to a rugby match etc.

I would say it depends on the type of flask you are using. If it's a plain metal one, I wouldn't leave the whisky in for long because it will definitely take on a metallic taste.

I've got a lovely little stainless steel flask which is OK for keeping whisky in for a few hours. The screw top doesn't seem to seal very well either which doesn't help. Looks cool though!

I've also got a funny little hip flask which is a metal tube with a glass tube inside (with a good tight fitting cork) and I'm quite happy putting good whisky in that for a few days or even up to a week. It's always been fine.

Hope this helps.

I once skied with a hipflask of whisky. I took a hard fall, got up slighly bruised to the ribs and thought nothing more of it until I noticed people getting out of the gondola when I got in with looks of disgust on their faces. The flask had cracked and I stank of whisky.

I once got skied over, when I had a flask in my back pocket. The edge of the skis actually cut through the outer layer of my sallopettes and lefct a deep groove in the flask.

So drinking whisky actually saved my arse....

My Dad's mate had a half bottle of whisky in his back pocket when he was at the football (this was back in the late 60s/early 70s). He slipped, fell and ended up in hospital having bits of broken glass tweezered out of his cheeks.

So my advice would be a metal flask with a 50/50 split of cooking whisky and drambuie. Should keep the chill off smile
