Hi folks,

I'm looking for a way of monitoring my home PC from my work PC, gotomyPC looks like quite an awesome bit of kit, however... i don't want to pay for it smile

Anyone know of a web-based product that i can download to my home PC and access via the tinterweb rather than a downloadable programme (i can't run .exes at work).

Thanks guys, any pointers would be much appreciated.

Echo the above, I also run the iPhone app for Logmein. Works very well.

Another suggestion is VNC viewer. Also have a free version for 'view only'. I.e. no copying files remotely to a PC you are working on.

check with your IT bods

as logmein and gotomypc need UPnP enabling
and that is often a big NO.NO on enterprise firewalls

Another one to look at may be Teamviewer. This is more for support than remote use but again, it's free.

Does the app work over 3G or does it need wifi?

Works over 3G or Wifi. Wifi obviously best.

Also Edge if desperate, but slow.

Been using UltraVNC for years to get to the home PC from work and across the home network to get from the main PC to a linux box (laptop with a smashed screen). VNC is simple, light on system resources, free, secure and easy to use. you can wrap it up for extra security in SSH connections through PuTTY but that's a bit more complicated.

Always wondered how there was a market for paying for gotomypc when the various flavours of VNC have done it all for free for years

Logmein worked great for ages at work until they plugged the firewall. Then it still worked if you went directly to the secure link. Now they've plugged it completely ;(

is that true - I have far more than 2 registered?

are you saying that you can only control two at a time?

I have about 25 registered, but I think or in my experience I can only control one at a time.

Another issue with LogMeIn is that the free one requires administrative privileges on the target PC.

Is gotomypc web based? As in ... can you run Firefox from Portable Apps on a memory stick to get round most admin privileges and corporate firewalls?

Brilliant results for me. Setup Logmein last night and have been using it this morning. Quite impressed with it so far.

Put RDP on my iPhone for use at home as I don't fancy spending £18 for the Logmein iPhone app!

I've had exactly the same, installed it at home last night.

Fired up firefox (!!) at work, installed the add-on and it works in your browser perfectly.

Bit slow but i expected that, no slower than a VPN though so i'm very pleased!

Cheers for the advice guys, you can trust PH to sort any problem!

Good good! smile

Does anyone have experience of the Logmein iPhone app? Worth the money? I'm not sure I'd have much use for it really.
