Man alive this is complicated!

I'm working through a practical (theoretical for now) example import to try and get my head around the whole process of importing from abroad, but I can't find a suitable category for my "thing".

http://online.businesslink.gov.uk/bdotg/action/tar... is the online version.

Does anyone understand this voodoo? My sample "thing" is a sex toy. Specifically, a vibrator which you attach to an MP3 player which then vibrates to the music. smile

There doesn't seem to be a category for grot. Anyone know what rules would apply in this case?

(p.s. discounts available to PH members biggrin)

If you're not embarassed, you can phone them and ask. They'll look it up and give you the Commodity Code.

Yeah I know you can phone up and ask, but I thought I'd have a pop at figuring it out first from the information available. It's not easy!

Anyway if you phone up and ask don't they just do what you tried to do? Or is there another secret list of everything ever invented they can refer to? lol

OK, what's this thing made of? there are differenty classifications for rubber and plastic, for example.

On the web link you provided, go to "EXplore by Import", and then click on the top-line category (what the thing is made of), then find the closest match you can to what it actually is (or "Other") and continue to drill down until you can't go any further. The 10 (or sometimes 8) digit number is what you need.

In some countries they use (IIRC) 12 digit numbers, but as you;re importing, that's not your problem.

If, doing the above, you go firstly go to section VII (Plastic and articles thereof; rubber and articles thereof), and then choose, for example, Chapter 40 (Rubber and articles thereof). Then possibly 4014, and then "Other", giving you a code of 4014 90 00 00.

You may have to play arounda bit tio get the closest match to what you want.

Thanks Doofus, it's kind of what I was expecting the answer to be.

I know, I'll import one so I can take it apart and find out what it's made of. D'oh! Need a code... smile Bit of a chicken and egg situation.

I'll give them a ring later.

Where's it coming from? If you only want one at this stage, I'd expect them or their agents to be able to handle the clearance for you.

if its one just get them to put it in the post marked as a present or something similar- HMRC aren't going to be bothered about £20 of sex toy!

It's 1 now, it might be 10,000 later... hence why I'm trying to figure out how it all works properly.

An agent will work all of this out for you.

Work out the duty rate at approx. 1% and you'll not be far off. It's certainly not going to be much higher or lower, and locking this down to 0.9% or 1.2% really isn't going to make a huge amount of difference.

You won't be expected to arrange this yourself on an import.

HTH.

p.s. Thanks for the offer on sourcing these for you, but I'm afraid we'll have to bow out of this one, sorry. We also import toys (as in, toys for children), and it would make things awkward for us if our existing clients were to find out. Apologies I can't help, hope you understand.

No worries! I understand people can have an adverse reaction to these things.
