I have just loaded Nokia Sports Tracker to my N95. I want to use it to track some of the routes I take when out walking with the dog . Some of the routes I know well and I'm just curious how many miles they are and some will be exploring unfamiliar territory.

I would like to be able to use this for 2 things .

1- Saving the routes I've done and exporting them to Google Maps to see my route as an overlay on the google map screen. Is this possible ? Anyone actually done it.

2- In the event of getting lost use it to retrace my steps or direct me back to my start point . If I have to call on this feature I'd like to see a view of google maps on my phone if possible , I only want to use 3G access when absoloutely necessary to avoid running up high data charges.

Any tips would be appreciated.

I use it as a simple pedometer for recording the length of dog walks and cycle rides - The altitude never seems to make sense though but that could be down to the external GPS receiver I have to use on my N73. I diddnt know you could link the data to Google maps though, that could be interesting.

Just been out on a short test route. Managed to save / export the route but having trouble interfacing this with google maps. I am using a program called T.Y.R.E at the moment but not having much luck. I shall persevere , if i find a simple way of doing it before I get any answers I'll post here for anyone wishing to try it.

ETA

For those wishing to try ,

In sports tracker you have the option to export a route/workout.

You can save it in a few different formats, I'm using GPX format. It will save it to your phone / memory card so you will need to connect your phone to your laptop/pc or at least copy the file onto your computer.

Download some free software called T.Y.R.E , stands for Trace Your Route Everywhere

Use the software to open the file you have saved from sports tracker.

Depending on the length of your route it will load each log as a waypoint. A typical 1.5 mile route , running, will result in about 1000 of these waypoint ( A gps log of Lat/Long)

Press CTRL A to 'select all' of the waypoints and then press the the show button, Google maps will open automatically and each waypoint will be shown as a pushpin. As the pushpins are only a metre or so apart they merge together to show the route as a red line overlayed on the google map view.

This is my dog's favourite walk , about 1.5 mile loop.

I used to when I ran Leeds half marathon last year.

It said I'd covered 16 miles???

It does the things you want but needs good line of site of your phone and even then isn't fantastically accurate. There are better gadgets out there for doing this, but they aren't free.

I love it - use it for skiing and walking. The only problem is the effect it has on battery life. On my N82 I get about 3 hours max with GPS running. To fix this I use one of those cheap AA battery powered chargers - I get more than double with this, and you can change the AA battery without the phone knowing so unlimited life really.

Do you have to pay a subscription for google earth , or is there a free version that will allow overlay the kml file ?

All downloaded and working. I tried downloading earlier but it was asking for a subscription first.

I had Google earth on when it first came out , after a few months it said the trial period had finished and i would need to subscribe . Does that still happen ?
