Not really a rant or even a full scale whinge but I thought I'd share what I thought to be a strange encounter in the local hardware shop today.

My OHs business has a chainlink erm..chain outside and one of them has snapped in the middle so off I popped to pick up a caribiner clip or similar. There is a local shop which sells little things like that so in I went and asked if he had anything similar.

This is what he suggested.

Perfect I thought, it should fit and it's only 50p.

By this point I had a fiver in my hand and was ready to hand it over I asked if he had a slightly bigger one to which he replied no.

I said well I'm only over the road if it's the wrong size I'll bring it back to you.

This is where got a bit strange. He looked at me in disgust and said "Nooooooooo, really. You really expect me to take this back in for a refund, I can't do that you know"

I said "really, I'm just in raf_gti plc over the road, I've just got to double check it fits"

he said "noooo, that's not how it works, you honestly expect me to take it back?"

Now I'm not arsed about 50p but I was gobsmacked by his attitude, especially being a neighbourly business.

If he had said sorry we don't do refunds then fair enough but I've honestly never been spoken to like that in a shop before such was the patronising tone in his voice.

In the end I just laughed at him and left with a "whatever". It's off to B&Q tomorrow for me.

0/10 no swearing and a lot of rambling.

I think he has to be very careful with lifting equipment, for all he knows you could be lifting an engine out of your car over stressing the shackle leaving him liable to the next customer if it fails.
That said a 50p item for a neighbour he could probably be more understanding.

It was only intended to be used as a missing link in a chain, no lifting involved!

Just find a nut & bolt, fit it to chain, weld end together and that's it.

Saved 50p and everyone's happy. Including hardware guy (no comebacks)

I know what you mean. But every single independent hardware/plumbing supply/building material shopkeeper speaks like that to anyone who isnt a tradesman. It amazes me. THey think you are thick because you don't know everything about plumbing.
