I wouldn't give a specific amout to most of the well know charities as through experiance i have seen how it is wsted through both bureaucracy as well as poor decision making. I also rarely believe in all of the messages and causes that most give (safespeed and captin gatso excluded wink )

I would instead gift a proportion directly in a similar way to the secret millionaire where i could see it going directly to the recipient. However with £85 million i may expand this a little.

Does new cars for family and friends count as charity???

Yes in my book charity is giving it away to a cause you see fit for giving to.

If I won that much I'd give about 50% as £40m would still see all my family and close friends well sorted and buy me a lovely car collection.

Very little if any of that money would go to any big known charities though. It'd primarily go to little known wildlife, conservation and animal based charities which generally struggle to get by at all.

i certainly wouldt give 75% to charity man thats crazy youd be giving them over 60 million.

i would more than likely set up my own so that i can give directly to what i believe in and not to a charity who will then take some to pay themselves with the remainder going to what they deem suitable.

but if i got £85m woul probably give around 3-5 million to a charity, and 2 million each to three borthers and sisters and 2x sets of parents.
leaving me the some total of LOTS TO SPEND ON CARS!
i know im mean arent i!

It's amazing to see that so far the poll is producing some results by people that are voting "I would give 0%" but are not commenting...how strange that people who would keep it all but not want to associate themselves with this fact wink

I understand your point but just think about the amount of time and resource it would take from your day to day life to organise the distribution of the money you would invest in to your "self set-up charity"...I think you would find it hard to do this and spend the remainder of your winnings on yourself in your new life style.

Mine would probably go into prevention causes rather than charities. If things were prevented then there wouldn't be much need for charity. Exceptions obviously apply to this such as cancer research and unpredictable/unavoidable things in life. Rough amount of 85m probably 10m-15m

With a post count like yours I'm sure you have stocks in PH and therefore you already give to the mass public and do not need any more wink

If the charity was doing anything worth while, couldn't they sell it rather than asking for hand outs?

I would do odd generous things, and give some money for people to help themselves - ie back my friends/family to start a business or similar, but I wouldn't give to "charidee" mainly on principle.

If I had 85mill then I would start my own charity and make sure that every penny is used properly.

I would probably give 50% of it, the rest would go to me, some investments (making the money make money) and then some would be put away for the kiddies (when I have some)

I'd give some money to family and do something extremely conceited like donating money to have a department of the university I went to named after me to teach postgraduate studies in aspects of transportation policy and fund a professor or two at universities I like in subjects I respect.

But wholesale giving - that's not me.
