Combi boiler problem, any plumbers?
Discussion
Don't know if there are any plumbers reading this or anyone with some knowledge:
I have a brittony combi boiler (i know they are rubbish!) the heating and the hot water is not getting very hot. the plumber came out and was told it was due to a blockage, he took all the pipes out but found nothing. The boiler worked fine after that for about 3 days before going back to it's usual ways.
Watching it, the flame will kick in fine but when it fires up fully it cuts out within a second hence the water going warm/ cold.
Anyone got any ideas what it could be? The plumber is ringing around today to get some more ideas but like he said, he does not want to start replacing parts that are not faulty. I guess it's a process of elimination?
Thanks in advance

A few years ago my back room fireplace kept cutting out. A plumber mate of mine diagnosed that dust and cat hair had caught on the air intake (has a grille over it), was reducing the amount of air the flame needed to burn, smaller flame, flame not hitting the thermocouple = fire switches off after a few seconds.
Worth checking?

My Potterton boiler packed up right in the middle of all of that snow we had earlier in the month! Bloody thing failed on a known issue with the PCB needing replacement. I tried all of the local gas / plumber / central heating people locally and not one called me back! Tried British Gas and was charged £168 for a one-off fixed fee repair. I kinda knew it was the PCB and that part was around £80-£90 so it worked out fine for me, but if its a small fix then you run the risk of a fairly large bill for not a lot of work (and that's how they make their money).
But I have never had any issues with BG fitters. They do a pretty good job and its not hideously expensive to others. Even the local ones were quoting £100 call out before VAT and parts. So its quite competitive. Oh, and I managed to get an engineer to fix my boiler in the same day I called - no way would I have got a local one within that time frame.
Try them if you fail with anyone else. They are not that bad.

We've recently had a similar problem. The boiler would ignite and then cut out straight away.
Turned out to be the synchronous motor valve between in the hot water line. Effectively keeping it shut as if there was no load on the system - so nothing for the boiler to do.

5 minutes to swap.
If you system has this kind of motor it should be housed in a box with an override lever. This will hopefully help identify if this is the problem.
