There's not to many that you can build from scratch now. Most seem to be Ready To Run.

What do you want to do with it? Where are you likely to use it? Are there any local clubs near you? All questions you need to ask yourself when choosing.
I race 1/8th scale nitro rallycross buggies and the number of people i have seen lose interest because they either have nowhere to use them, not sure what to do with it (it gets boring in the park on your own..) and also haven't a clue what to do when it all goes wrong.

Ansmann is at the lower end of the manufacturers scale, they have some good stuff at a fair price but a lot of it is really cheap rubbish. Better off looking at something from HPi, Traxxas, Losi etc as they are built a lot tougher and spares shouldnt be a problem at any local hobby store.

I just purchased a B44 from Modelsport. I live not too far away so went to the shop.
Some of the models on display are huge and the 5b? baja buggy looks awesome but they are pretty big and need a fair space to run in. So you need somewhere to use it.
If your used to a small 1:10 Tamiya car like my old TL01 Imprezza you'll find the Savage pretty big.
The Associated B44 is kind of smaller than i thought it would be at first but is a good size for going out and about and having fun without needing an acre to get it going.
I also wanted a kit you could build yourself. Hard to get hold of nowadays. The only other one i fancied was the Schumacher Cat but that was more expensive and set up for LiPo which i also couldn't afford. So I got the B44 which after building it and nearly finishing i'm happy so far, just need to mount the tyres on the rims, paint the body (got it masked up but was too dark when i got it ready to do it today (well yesterday)). Once i have the body painted then i can screw the under tray on, fit the top and that should give me an idea of how much room i have and thus where to mount the esc and the receiver. Then i just need to charge the batteries up whilst i paint the body. Getting excited now.
Whilst i was at the Modelsport shop 2 people came in with nitro models that wouldn't run properly. They seem to need alot more care and attention so i'd make sure you are happy with all the maintenance they need before you buy one and then leave it as an expensive shelf ornament. Also consider how much noise they make if you plan on using it near houses etc.
Otherwise good luck finding what your after. If you can, do as mentioned above and find a local place to go to and speak to owners about maintenance and fuel cost etc.

Thanks all for your input, I dont have any tracks near me so it will just be somthing to run in the park, my mate is also thinking of getting one. I am worried it will just sit on the shelf alonf with the electric ones but I guess it will look good.
Thanks again
Any adult that gets a radio controlled car to play with in the park will get bored after the first outing. I race 1/10th offroad at national level and am interested because of the racing and the competition that brings. If i was just driving it round the park i would be bored senseless. Thanks again
Unless you have cash to burn, or plan to race it, id seriously suggest you think strongly about getting one or not.
+1 on the above.
My mate had a 1/8th scale Schumacher truck, I got a 1/8 Hong Nor buggy to drive with him. His is almost always broken and its quite boring on your own.
Its fun the first time, and then you get bored, mine had sat in its box for about 6 months before it came out in december for the snow.
I have a track not too far away, but I wasn't very good at going round it, so lost interest.

Neither am I, but I manage to fight for top spot in the 'Z' finals quite happily My mate had a 1/8th scale Schumacher truck, I got a 1/8 Hong Nor buggy to drive with him. His is almost always broken and its quite boring on your own.

Well we are doing the 8th10 series this year and we followed the 8th09 to all the rounds last year. Track is being redeveloped at the moment still keeping the hill section but slightly modified and we are extending the track towards the back and also doing some reprofiling to the jumps and bumps. Did not recognise it, we came there for the 08th09. The hill section is awesome.
Looking forward to this year, some new tracks again.
