Hi guys,

Looking to shortcut some research for a family member on what simple and free database software to go for. Will be on the Windows platform and used for a contacts database that is almost certainly going to grow beyond the usual Excel spreadsheet. So, based on a vague familiarity with Access the family member wants a free equivalent. It's definitely not going to grow into a web server back end or anything requiring industrial strength or security smile

What suggestions would you PHers put forward based on your experience of relatively simple database requirements?

There is a database in OpenOffice, I haven't used it myself but I suspect it's of an order of complexity similar to Access (given that the other products in open office tend to mirror the equivalent MS products).

If its even for light commercial use - open office / google apps.

Or for more robust, cheap and always backed up:
