Having wheels refurbed next week and thought it would be a good time to put a protector on them to keep the brake dust at bay..

I am looking for something that is fairly easy to apply.. or don't mind putting the effort in if i only have to apply it once a year?

Cheers

Pop across to the Detailing section. I would myself as soon as the wheels are ready give them a really good clean with a non acidic ph neutral cleaner, then apply two coats of Chemical Guys Jetseal 109. Finally apply a decent wheel wax and reapply the wax every six weeks.

Wash as normal (Bilberry make a great wheel cleaner which is diluted with water) and twice a year reapply the Jetseal 109 with the wheels off the car.

Not really , what he said above is about right .

Wheels are the hardest things to keep clean (of course why you started the thread in the first place) due to being low to the ground picking up all the grime from the road .
when driven fast in wet conditions , with the speed of rotation creates a jet wash effect on the wheel surface from the water spray with added road grime and salt which can be found in the water this time of year .

This is why use see diamond cut (polished face) wheels starting to corrode under the clear lacquer , they pic up small (tiny) stone chips on the leading edges of spokes , then the owner comes along with a acid based wheel cleaner (which nearly all wheel cleaners are)cleans his wheels with a acid type cleaner which just helps the corrosion along its course .

you see this type of corrosion (starting from wheel centers or spokes ) with no evidence of any paint damage alot on the E46 M3 .

When you take into account wheels depending on driving condtions vary alot in temp (heat soak form brakes) , being cleaned with acid (would not do this to the cars paint work) , and lastly the very hot brake dust burning into the wheels paint surface or even the protective coating you have applied to the wheels , there is no way any product could last a year in these conditons .

Some of the very best sealents when mixed with hardners only give at the most a years protection on weekend cars bodywork .

Use a proper wheel wax/sealent apply a couple of coats , then wash with citrus based cleaner (much kinder to the wheels and portective coating) once a week , BUT you will need to re apply sealent from 1 month to 3 months depending on how often cars is used .

some products

acid based cleaners

and some wheel sealents

and this could be put on first for extra protection as said allready , then the wheel sealents

The FK1000p is a winner on wheels, perhaps only surpassed by the long life products such as GTechniq C1/C5

I use Poorboys and it is pretty good. Swissvax Autoban wheel guard is also an excellent product, but waxes deteriorate and are self sacrificial, so buy a decent sealant too.
