I'm well impressed at this one! My N97mini came with 10 free "day" licences for the navigation and after using one the other week to get me to my mate's new house in Chester I was very impressed, I had been contemplating buying a full license once the day ones had run out - now I don't need to!

This is a pleasantly surprising move from Nokia, and they've basically killed off the competition on the Symbian platform - TomTom, Sygic, Route66, they'll basically just drop their development.
Damn handy for me, was wondering what I'd do for getting the US maps when we head off on holiday in august, Nokia have gone and given it away!
Have to admit that as of the last version I tried (I think it was v3), I didn't particularly like Ovi Maps, but then I should admit to only trying a hacked version with the older v2 maps installed.

Be nice if they could fix the lack of PBAP support too .. then (24 months after getting it) my N95 would be the phone I wanted from the start.
I've downloaded the complete UK maps from Ovi, and installed on my N95, and i can search and plan routes no problem. It is out there, but they don't make much of a song and dance about it. I was hoping they'd turn it loose soon, as it doesn't fit in with today's other options.
Came in handy for a weekend walk of shame...

When it says "free", does it mean the map licences, or the actual data downloaded to the phone as it used? I keep seeing the megabytes number increasing down at the bottom right. Is this free?

The use of the software and the licences etc are free.

2. Download and install Nokia Map Loader onto your PC.
3. Plug phone into PC, start map loader
4. In map loader, say which country/region you want - it'll go ahead and download the mapping data from Nokias servers onto your phone
Its not like Google maps in sucking data down, its more like a traditional TomTom - most things are stored locally, unless you want traffic or other (obviously) net related stuff.

If you were on WM it would have been worse - getting TomTom on WM to work with an external GPS, it was like going back in time 15 years and messing around with DOS config.sys and all that malarky. Utterly ridiculous.
