What's it like and which country would you recommend?

I'm thinking of going in the summer for 10-14 days when I've got time to just get away and see a new place, so I'm interested to hear PHers experiences and ideas.

TIA

I've been to Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Didn't really stay long enough in Malaysia to formulate a decent opinion.

Singapore is a great place to start, "Asia lite"- Very clean and safe, however I thoroughly enjoyed my 3 days there, plenty to do, although the profusion of huge malls didn't really float my boat. Few days there, then up to one of the Thai islands?

However, with 10-14 days you could just go to Bangkok, spend a couple of days, then fly down to Koh Samui- Or if like me you prefer less commercial Koh Lanta on the other coast is lovely.

I would say though- Unless you stay in over-the-top, large chain hotels, Thailand is extremely cheap (Malaysia and Singapore lesser so). I would seriously consider making your holiday 3 weeks long- The biggest cost by far is the return flights so it makes sense to get maximum value out of them!

I went to China for 3 weeks, toured from Urumuqui to Kunming, via Xining, Lanzhou, Xian and Chengdu.

Incredible place, very very cheap! Loads to see, immense history.....

only downside is the people are very suspicious, we had to pay deposits for hotels, couldnt get a taxi without our Chinese guide or order food very well.
But we were off the beaten track most of the time.
