Monthly Gas Payments??
Discussion
Hi, looking for some advice. I received a couple of letters today from Scottish Gas about my direct debit. I must admit I've lost touch with my monthly outgoings over the last year, but the letter said they are reducing my monthly DD from £118 to £69 per month. I've spoken to some friends with similar houses and they are of the opinion that I'm paying too much. Everyone else is averaging £50-60 per month. My house is a 1930's brick built semi-detached. I have double glazing and good loft insulation so the heating and fire are really not on that much. I also work away from home so the house can lie for weeks at a time, with the heating on timer just to take the chill out the air. How does that ammount sound to anyone? Excessive?? Correct??
I'm goig to phone them tomorrow to speak about my billing to see if there is maybe an error at their end.

Well, a first step would be to compare the DD sum with the actual amount of gas used. If your account is vastly in credit, it is.
Utility companies love DDs. When they're a bit strapped for cash, or fancy boosting their share price, or the directors fancy a nice bonus, they can help themselves to everyone's bank accounts and hope the punters don't notice.

It costs me around £120.00 per month on a 4 bed detached house, with 4 adults living in it, for gas, electricity, two phone lines, internet, PAYG moblie and a BlackBerry. I'm £95.00 in credit on my gas and £14.73 in credit on my electricity as well. And we don't live in the dark or cold! If you want to know how to get cheaper home bills drop me a PM.
£90 a month - detached extended / refurbed 3 bed farmhouse with 2 bed detached annexe both on the same gas supply.
My mother is at home all day in the annexe but the plus side is the main house has solars for water heating.
Still reckon we'll be owing them a bit this quarter due to the extreme cold snap encountered recently!

My supplier has just told me they are upping our monthly DD from £250pm to £350pm. Thats just for just Gas & Electric on our 3 Bed Detatched. I know its high - but it looks like its really really high. We have had the heating on pretty much continuously over the winter, and we have loads of electronics that are always on or on standby (4-6 PCs at one time, 3 Fridges, Sky, Amp, DVD, Subwoofer and big TV) then we have dishwasher on once a day, and American Washer and Dryer on pretty much on once a day as well. I put up with the costs as we are not careful about usage and we use a lot. But, is it really twice as much as a 'normal' household?
