British pie eating at 30-year high
Chicken pie with onion gravy

Harry Wallop Telegraph Consumer Affairs Editor said:
The humble pie has made a remarkable come back, as consumers ditch pizzas and burgers in favour of the great British staple.
Sales of the pastry and potato-topped dishes have hit a 30-year high with retailers across the country reporting sales of an extra 17 million pies over the past two years, according to Nielsen, the market research company.
This pie market has grown by 16 per cent to £229 million since the start of 2008, the company said, as recession-hit Britons recreated pub and restaurant dishes at home and food manufacturers started making gourmet varieties.
Since the early 1980s demand for hot pies has fallen flat with many consumers turning to American style fast food such as burgers, fried chicken and pizzas as well as ethnic ready meals.
A resurgence in British food and the creation of better-quality supermarket pies – far removed from the Vesta pies in a tin – has helped restore their place on the table.
Matthew O' Callaghan, chairman of the British Pie Awards, said he was delighted with the current trend. "This isn't a surprise to me, people are developing an increasing interest with pies.
"I think people are going back to traditional foods like pies and people are starting to trust them again as a quality food. You can even get a lot of designer pies nowadays, the traditional and the innovative are revitalising the market," he said.
Tesco said its sales had increased by 36 per cent over the last two years and sales were now at a 30-year high. Andrew Mossop, the supermarket's pie buyer, said he thought the image of the pastry snack had been totally transformed. "The tough, fatty beef or chicken in unappetising, gloopy gravy has gone and has been replaced by far better quality tender meat, finer vegetables and sauces and more delicate pastry," he said.
The top five fillings across all retailers:
1. Steak
2. Steak and kidney
3. Minced beef and onion
4. Chicken and mushroom
5. Chicken and gravy
I have to say though, onion gravy with chicken pie is just wrong. It just is.Sales of the pastry and potato-topped dishes have hit a 30-year high with retailers across the country reporting sales of an extra 17 million pies over the past two years, according to Nielsen, the market research company.

Nothing beats going to a football match at a 4th division club in the late 1970's, being involved in the mass hooliganism of the time whilst wearing flares and then getting a meat and potato pie from the local chippy on the way home.
C'Mon the Dale!
Almost as good as having fish and chips on the beach at Whitby circa 1984 and then having sex with a Yorkshire lass who complained her bum got wet and cold in the sand. Oh those were the days
Regards
Andy, sadly living in the past since he is now middle aged and doing nothing similar either food wise or sex wise for a long long time.
