360: Component vs. HDMI...

A quick one...
Is there any visual and audio or difference between HDMI & Component?
I'm just about to buy an AV receiver/amp and have both cables for my 360, but if I want to use HDMI, I'll need the HDMI with Optical out on to get the audio.
So can I save myself £20 on the new cable and use component instead?
I know HDMI can do audio & video, but the receiver can't by HDMI...

Looks a little bit sharper to my eyes, but if you've not gone from one straight to the other, you'd probably not notice. I'm sure you could get a HDMI and toslink cable for under £10 though.
Fairy nuff. I'll have a look out for a cheaper cable.I guess I could try it on component and if it's disappointing then get the HDMI/optical cable afterwards.
I just wasn't sure if there was a noticeable difference...

Any decent, new amp should be able to handle that no problem. Perhaps it'd be more worth your time choosing an amp that can handle audio over HDMI, otherwise you're limiting your options in the future.
Because it's a more budget end one. It's been recommended on sound quality, which is far more important to me than having an extra cable in the back. If you are going budget, then be aware that it will not be the cable that will degrade the signal it will be your amp.
The only difference I have read about from users, seems to be a difference in contrast.
You may find the picture is worse just by going through your amp, compared to what you are used to now. I think you will find that less acceptable.
Oh and dont go buying a gold HDMI cable, you are better off just writing MONSTER in felt tip on a Tesco cable.

From what I've read, it seems to have fine picture quality. The only real negative seems to be the lack of audio over HDMI. The only difference I have read about from users, seems to be a difference in contrast.

Yeah I won't be buying an oxygen-free copper one with gold plugs!
Does your TV have an optical out socket by any chance? I simply run HDMI to my TV and optical cable out of the TV into my amp.Before this, I had it wired straight to the amp but then ran into the same problem as you as my new 360 didn't have the optical connection.
I also ran HDMI, Component and VGA on the 360.I would say image quality will depend more on your TV than the cables.I used to see better colours, but a marginally more fuzzy image on component on my old 720 tv with the VGA being sharper, but it needed some settings changed on the 360 to up the richness.HDMI sat somewhere in the middle of those, so was the best bet all round.I then got a better 42" 1080p TV and the difference between all of them is so minimal, it really makes no odds.

It doesn't have optical out, no. One oversight on my behalf when I bought it! I'll see how it looks through the receiver and work out which cable is best.
