I am on my second set of Toyo T1R tyres on my 96 Griff 500. On the first set I did several track days and two European endurance rallies (so they had some serious use). When the rears were 70% worn they developed a 'wobble'. This was a shake that went through the whole car at any speed above about 70mph. As the tyres had done plenty of work I replaced them without too much complaint. However the latest set are displaying similar symtoms and are barely half worn.
I was wondering if anyone else had experienced a similar problem?
(Otherwise I think they are an excellent all round tyre)

just picked up this topic. Have for a while thought that my griff fitted with these Toyos felt un predictable. Spent many hours adjusting coil overs, setting up re bound and height settings, even going as far as replacing bushes to get rid of this shimmy when loading up the tyres and then coming round to straight ahead. I then looked at recommended tyre pressures on various forums and clubs for this tyre and proposed purpose and also vehicle weight and design etc. TVR pressure settings very low according to forum experts, however i have tried running with higher settings for my griff , 30 rear 28 front and still find excessive side wall flex on all four. Even allowing me to lean against side of the car and de form/ flex tyre sidewall all be it slightly. Could this be the problrm ? has any one else had problems with this tyre ? seems to me that not enough sidewall stiffness.

IMHO those pressures seem pretty high, I run with 22F & 24R for normal road use. Am very pleased with the T1Rs & happily use them on trackdays when it's too wet for my DZ03Gs. What about your suspension geo?

I hated them on the stock 15 and 16 inch rims after coming from SO2s via R888s... however, much lower profiles on 17 and 18s are the dogs

Yep. Mine feels good at 24F 26R on the Toyos.
IIRC the manual says 22F 24R for the OE Bridgestones but most find that too soft for the Toyos.

Falken FK452s on my second pair now for the rears fab. the toyos are just a bit too hard compound in my opinion and R888 are no good in very wet conditions .

I used to run T1-S (forerunner to the T1-R) on my V6 Mondeo daily driver, but found that they wore out the shoulders fairly quickly - too many dual carriageway roundabouts on the daily commute I guess. I found them to be a good tyre, nice and grippy, but quite soft. Hilarious in the wet when just about down to the legal limit though. Not to be recommended in monsoon season when they need replacing.

I also had T1-R's on my previous Cobra kit car when I finally saved up for some new Halibrand 17" replica alloys (245/45/17s on the back and 215/45/17 on the front) and found that they were also very good and very predictable. Would recommend them as long as you keep some tread depth in the wet.

I have had several sets of Toyo T1-s or R's and have never had a duff set. I am thinking about going back on to them on my Mondeo as I dont rate my current Eagle F1's especially for the cost of them.

Cheers

Marty

Got through about 5 sets of Toyos now T1S and T1R's. 24 front and 26 rear (on 15" front, 16" rear wheels) is a good starting point. I've used these pressures and the wear is perfect so must be about right.

yes

24f 26r on the T1R. Great tyres...ALL my road cars have them.

It is possible to deliminate/pull a carcas out of shape, but thats really on crap tyres.
Toyos should NEVER do this, how ever a lost weight on the alloys is common with agressive use.

R888 the dogs danglies afaic...don't let them get cold tho! nonoeek

T1-S on front and T1-R on rear of Griff 500 (original 15/16 Estoril rims). Unhappy with tyres causing bouncy ride on bumpy East Anglia roads. Ride was firm on SO2s with polybushed suspension. Inflated TOYOs harder than "normal" 22F/24R, but still not happy at all...worse with a passenger when bouncing felt like I was about to lose adhesion. Mentioned to Scole Engineering and they suggested 28F/30R...followed their advice and ride much better...doubt if I will buy them again though.

I think your problem is the T1-S's...... I borrowed a set of wheels with T1S's whilst mine were in for a refurb (mine at the time were T1R's) and the S's were like driving a bouncy castle, whilst the R's at 24/26 were a great road tyre.

Yes sorry should have made it clear that i have the Proxes s. Sexy looking tread pattern, but as mentioned in my original post way to much sidewall flex. As just mentioned ' bouncy castle ' characteristics are just spot on. When cornering moderatley hard and then coming to the straight ahead it feels like a wobbly jelly for a good few seconds before i can unclench the buttocks.

Until driving a TVR i never understood tyres, i still don't.... but having tried 6 different types i know there is a mssive difference which you dont notice as much on your over weight every day hack,,,,,, toyos t1r in the winter, kumho ecsta v70a in the summer... my choice any way....... the toyo t1s you'll get sea sickness with lol

Are you sure the 'wobble' is caused by the tyres?

I have T1R's on the rear and they are also worn over 50%, particularly the shoulders after a track day. Following said track day I had a vibration through the car once over 80mph and tried balancing and aligning the tyres and wheels but that didn't help. Turned out a CV bolt had sheared off the Diff-end CV joint and the vibration may be caused by that. I've replaced the CV joint and the missing bolt, but haven't had the chance to drive the car to see if it's fixed it.

Might be worth having a look at your CV bolts - should be 6 on every CV joint.

Thanks for the input. I will get the rears rebalanced and the CV joints checked for starters and go from there. Just for the record I'm running 24 front 26 rear
on 15/16" precat Oz cross spoke rims that were refurbished 18 months ago when the latest T1R,s went on.

I have just (Thursday) had T1Rs fitted to the rear of my Griff from well worn SO3s, still have SO3s on the front, asked the fitter to pressure them to 26psi. I had some steady running on them yesterday afternoon and thought they felt a bit loose but put that down to them being new.
Had the car out this pm and got the car and tyres well warmed through when I went to overtake a 206 on a long straight ..........shhhhhhh-t....the back end was all over the place it was a real oh f-ck! moment that I could do without repeating. Just cruised home and checked the hot pressures 26.5 /27.5 are Toyos that sensitive?

I know the front splitter is a bit bent up but would that affect the handling or is it the newness and pressures of the Toyos, do they need a steady scrubbing in?
