I'm having some trouble getting rid of them - those little black spots of brake dust or whatever they are.

Not sure if this is right or not, but they start to corrode the wheels if they're left on?

They'll be tar spots, same as you get on the lower body panel - remove them with a clay bar ! Tar spots wont corrode the wheel lacquer, but it's better to stay on top of them or it becomes a real pig to get them off.

Next buy a wheel sealant to help keep them at bay in the future and make wheels easier to clean in general!

They could be tar spots, or they could be brake dust pitting, best thing to do is first try a tar and glue remover on them, if they melt its tar, so just repeat the proses till they are gone, if they dont melt then clay, id suggest trying the tar and glue first as its a tricky job claying wheels that are a multi spoke design or alike and its not always easy to get in the corners with clay.

But if the T&G remover dont do the trick then claying should, as Nick says once you have got rid of them then use a wheel sealant, it will a make future cleaning a breeze but also help prevent anything else getting bonded to the wheel.

if you dont have tar and glue to hand then use a tad of petrol or lighter fluid on a cloth if tar.also the trusty magic sponge will often help shift them if brake dust spots.
