I've recently got hold of a 328i sport for a Nurburgring trip or two later in the year, and wanted to get some better tyres on it than the Linglongs and worn Yokos that are on it.

I've had T1R's on a couple of cars in the past and have been very impressed with them, and they're great value for money at just under £300 for the set of 4 delivered. For the same price I can get a set of Falken 452's. I've never tried these but have heard good things about them too. I was wondering if anyone had experience of both.

For tyres within that price range the Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta are getting rave reviews these days.

I have experience of both tyres you have descibed and in my opinion the Toyo T1R is without doubt the best wet tyre available before you get into a competition wet or intermediate. The Falken FK452 is an excellent tyre better suited to dry conditions and has similar grip levels to a Bridgestone SO2 which was a fantastic dry tyre. thumbup

I had both the Toyo's and Falkens on the back of my E36 M3 and would recommend the toyo's,

I just found they had better grip than the falkens and if anything lasted slightly better.

I strongly advocate the Toyos - they seem work very well on Bimmers

I run the Falken 452`s on my 350Z and find them great, especially in the dry. Did half a dozen laps at the ring on them and they held up well. I only did a couple back to back, and they were getting hot by the end of lap 2, but I`ll definately get a set again.

Hi Nige, you got any experience of T1R's to compare against?

I prefer the Toyo's and certain sized T1Rs were on sale from Camskill tyre when I was looking earlier today.

Have just got a set of T1R from Camskill, for £30 each on 195/50/15. Given the service I had, next time I'll pay the extra £5 per tyre and order from demon tweeks.

Haven't driven the falkens, but am quite impressed with the T1R. I'm coming from R888 though so it's a bit of a step down, but now i'm used to the lack of bite on turn in they're fine and braking performace seems good too. Yet to be used on track though.

What was wrong with the service? Also how much were R888's in 195/50/R15?

No idea what 006's issues were, but I've used Camskills on many occasions and have nothing but good things to say about their availability, service, & value.

Ditto, spent countless £££'s with them over the past 8 years. They've always been head and shoulders above anyone else in terms of knowledge, service and speed of delivery.

My problem with camskill? This no doubt breaks the name and shame rules, but since people asked...

Ordered tyres from Camskill on Sunday. Get an Email on tuesday morning saying "here's your tracking number with sttyLink". sttyLink tracker says tyres have been delivered and signed for by some random person whose name i don't recognise at my flats. Fair enough, I go home and there's no card from Citylink and no sign of my tyres.

So I send them an email in the evening asking if they could check with CityLink if it's a mistake. Had no reply by midday the next day so i phoned them.

Phone rings 6 times then cuts me off.
Same two more times.
Then get an automated answerphone which says they're busy and to call back later and then cuts me off.
Rang back later, 6 rings then cut off.
Rang back and got an answer.
Explained the situation (being perfectly nice, It's not their fault). Bloke on the phone could barely hide his contempt for me.
"You've obviously typed the tracking number in wrong"
"No i copied and pasted it from the email"
"Well you've obviously done that wrong, does it have an M on the end?"
"Yes, and it doesn't work without the M, I tried it"
"Well you'll see the date on the tracking link is ages old"
"No, it's yesterday"
"Hold please"
<hold>
"They're out for delivery tomorrow, OK? Bye"

20 minutes later they ring back while I'm driving and leave a message on my mobile.
"I've spoken to citylink and the drive got some bloke to sign for them and have put them under the stairs in the hallway"

Now, I'm not blaming them for sttyLink being rubbish as usual. What I am annoyed about is that it was apparently my fault the whole time and when it turned out not to be I got no apology.

DT are only slightly more expensive but their staff have always been fantastic when I've bought before, and have sorted problems out quickly and helpfully (for instance when a tyre was too far out of balance they collected the wheel and fitted the replacement so I didn't have to shell out for fitting). I knew I shouldn't have been tempted away for the sake of £15.

Any updates on this thread? I'm ordering a new set of tyres for my MINI Cooper tomorrow and and torn between these two. To be fair, they'll probably be on the car for at least 3 years, but I can't decide which is better in the wet and it makes more sense to get that one, since we're coming into winter. Or do I just go on price?

Another fan of T1R's here. Not tried Falken 452 though.

Stood up to some abuse at Cadwell earlier this year very well & were great in dry & damp conditions. Also quite happy with them on the road too.

My local tyre dealer matched the Camskill price BTW.

its been quite interesting reading this thread as T1Rs seem to get slated as being a pretty poor choice of tyre on a certain Civic forum but when i had some fitted they always seemed fairly gripy, not sure i would change back to them from r888s though

I used to use the Toyos all the time then because I started doing lots of trackdays as well in my daily driver I have tried loads of different makes. One thing I have found out is some tyres work great on one make of car and can be crap on another, like the Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta, they are terrible on a Saab 9000. The best tyre I have used this year is the Uniroyal Rainsport 2, I fitted them last xmas, did Bedford autodrome on a very cold day..-3deg C at the start of the day....they were excellent, ran the same tyres the rest of the year doing Aintree with the same tyres in torrential rain and they were fantastic, they have also done a few laps round Marham and the front ones are just getting close to the wear marks now but they still perform brilliantly. I am so impressed I fitted a full set to my Golf TDi and same thing amazing performance especially in wet conditions. Same price as the toyos also....I won't be buying toyos again (unless its the 888's) But as always YMMV

I wouldn't personally want T1R's on a relatively heavy car again (215/45R17 on a 280bhp/1500kg Legacy in my case), grip was fine but I found the overly soft/weak sidewall gave a somewhat inconsistent feel (very pressure sensitive) and was very susceptible to premature shoulder wear and punctures/cuts in the sidewall.

Replaced with Bridgestone RE001 which are better in almost every way - T1R have a slight edge in cold grip and ride comfort while RE001 have more grip when warm, a more consistent feel, much stronger sidewalls, quieter, tramline less, have lasted longer in my use and were cheaper at the time.

The T1Rs might be fine on a lighter car though, they're still popular with the MX5 crowd.

T1R's have the reputation as being for lighter cars... had them on my Proton and they were good. Went for FK-452's on the ZT and they are good as well.

If a BMW, and the tyres are big enough that T1R's aren't uber cheap, i'd get the Falkens.
