I was watching Resident Evil 3 today, and Las Vegas gets reclaimed by the desert. This made me think, how does this not happen in real life? Bloody great city, surely it'd get tons of sand storms ripping through it? What keeps the sand out?

yes

The long-haired, goateed talentless morons stand outside the city limits playing air guitar at the encroaching desert winds.

Unfortunately, when I was there, they obviously had a night off, as both the TI fireworks and Bellagio fountains were cancelled, due to high winds.

If you'd be so kind as to ask the curly haired fkwits for a refund, I'd be most obliged.

Sand is naturally repelled by neon gas, much like opposite poles of a magnet.

Hence why LA has so many garish neon lights.

Fact.

The desert surrounding las vegas isn't particularly sandy - its not the sahara - more rocks and hard ground with relatively very little sand on top - so it would take a very very long time for it to be "reclaimed". It would end up looking more like this:

Celine Dion is used to keep the sand at bay that is why she is kept there.
Or the desert is reg not an erg type desert hence the rock but little sand.

Of these two choices I think the Celine one is most likely.

yes The main threat to Vegas is the falling water levels in Lake Mead. Whether it would be any great loss is debatable of course.

Oi, both of you, get out of this thread! We'll have no sensible answers here!

Too many bodies in the desert, not enough sand:
