One or two questions Re: E46 M3
Discussion
Morning,
I have a 53 plate E46 M3 bought through BMW and has a BMW Warranty. There are a few things I have noticed, when braking from high speed quickly the brakes make quite a loud humming noise but there is no vibration and it seems to slow down well enough.
When I bought it a few months ago the wheels had had a refurb, three of them still look good but the laquer on one of them is starting to blister and peel.
Finally, the car has HK stereo but with a tape player. Can this be changed for a single CD and if so is it expensive to do?
Cheers,
Ed.

I have a cd changer in the boot but would still like the single cd in the car. I have no nav so think I may look at swapping as I no longer own any tapes. I presume the humming brakes are something to do with the drilled discs then. Probably shouldn't be doing those sorts of speeds anyway

As above, an in-dash cd player will cost you a touch over £100, you'll get £15-20 for your current HU.
There are 2 types of loom used in the e46 for the stereo, a 40pin and 17pin adaptor - with the 17pin adaptor being the old one. Being a 53 plate car I think yours will use a 40pin adaptor - worth checking first though.
With regards to the wheels peeling. I have a 53 plate M3 too and have the same problem. The warranty doesn't cover wheels
. I am getting mine done by Lepsons at the end of the month for circa £280+VAT for the four (19"ers).

Out of interest, Nick and OP, which wheel is your bad one? Before I had my wheels redone, I had one wheel that was significantly worse than the other three. I've got 18s, so not the usual worries with the 19" wheels looking s
te as the laquer peels, but for some reason my OSF rim was peeling much worse than the other three. No problems with the brakes or bearing (or receipts from the past for replacement for one corner) but the wheel just seemed to suffer more than the other 3.Lepsons did a great job on mine BTW.

Hi Ed,
Hope you're enjoying the car!
The brake humming is normal and is just because the brake discs are drilled.
53 plates would come with a tape player as standard. Even the ones with the SatNav option came with a tape player behind it as standard. It was a low cost upgrade I believe but I guess 6 years ago some people still had tapes! You should be able to get it changed to a single CD. I'm sure a dealer could do it.
The wheels will not be covered even by the AUC warranty so the best you could hope for would be a goodwill gesture from the dealer if it's bad enough to need re-doing.

There is a version of the navigation with a single CD player built in - not sure if that only appeared on later plate cars though.
Was an cost option on all nav cars. There was even a minidisc option! Most people seemed to spec tape as they had CD changers in the boot anyway.
I got in touch with the dealer and they said they will pay for the refurb. Not sure if I will bother with swapping the tape player yet.
Jon, I still feel like a right s**thead for messing you around with your car. I hope everything worked out for you, I really appreciated your help and patience.

Ed - that's good news about the dealer doing the right thing.
I put my car in the Pistonheads classified section yesterday. The weather's been so bad the past month or so I wasn't even able to take any decent photos. Here's the link: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1500118.htm. Let me know if you know of anyone who's looking!
