Hello Chaps and Chapettes of the TV&S forum. Salutations! biggrin

I could do with some local knowledge.

In late February I need a Sunday Lunch venue for a family gathering of eight or so. My niece is doing a show at the Uni (she studies dance) and it's also my wife's birthday...so it needs to be a little bit special but not ludicrously priced, either.

Ideally something like a gastro-pub or a relatively informal restaurant would be great. Doesn't have to be IN Guildford but can't be far from it either.

Venue suggestions would be most appreciated.

Don

We were always fond of the Squirrel, just south off the A3. Been a while since we've been, so might not even be there by now biggrin

The Black Swan in Ockham. thumbup A little bit more than pub fare in lovely rustic surroundings with plenty of parking. A little way north on the A3 from Guildford, but worth the trip. smile

The White hart is a very normal pub, good, but like any other Pub.

The Fox at Fox corner is excellent for lunch, proper menu with proper food.

Apparently..

The previous owners took lots and lots of deposits for Christmas Dinner and were gone one morning with all the money and no one heard anything again.

Back open now though, and does look like new management.

It should be good and win awards for the prices charged.
Watch the cost of the wine and additional items added to bill.

You may need to consider taking out a small morgage.

Indeed, it's not a gastro pub at all, but a restaurant that charge too much (London prices) for mediocre food and service. In my view that either need to up the game (food and service) or drop the prices/menu change and make it a proper relaxed gastro pub.

I blame the nearby competition. ie. there is none!! I will go back as I'd like to be proven wrong...

Seconded, and they now own/run the Squirrel at Hurtmore mentioned earlier too so on that basis it should be good.

The Parrot at Shalford is quite nice too. Also worth a look are the Inn on the Lake in Godalming and The Refectory in Milford.

If you want to be in Guildford then Jamie's Italian is worth a go and very reasonably priced.

I tried out the Hollyhock bistro in Bramley the other day (used to be Edwins but now rebranded). Very impressed and they even serve a real ale on tap so no having to drink bottled lagers!
