Ok. I will start ducking from the flak straight away !!
But realistically...why not ?
I have a 400 Chimaera which I'm going to struggle to get say 250 horses from (probably a lot less) without putting a supercharger on it at £4k, that's if my engine is up to it, so could be a lot more ££££'s.
Could look at putting a 5 ltr lump in it, but they aint cheap, and maybe 300bhp ish! if I'm lucky.

Cossie lumps are plentiful and cheap (you can buy a whole sierra cos sapphire breaking for a couple of K), incredibaly powerful (easy 400bhp) with the right head mods and turbo etc.

So in a nutshell, can it be done ? has it been done ?

It won't sound the same, but christ it will fly. Have you ever been in a 3 dr cossie with 400bhp ?
I have, and jesus christ it is soooooooooooooo quick. That vehicle weighs 1250kG, a bit more than a Chimaera.

OK GIVE IT TO ME !!! shoot

Buy a scooby and keep the chim plenty of very quick scooby's or evo's out there for the price of a super charger.

If its about the speed but the tiv is about so much more than pace. just my view

Check on the S forum. It's been done with a few S series so certainly possible. The engines are reasonaly cheap but you'd still be buying a 2nd hand engine and would at least need to be stripped down to check it's condition. The real time (and money) though would be consumed in making the modifications to make it fit.

To build a proper 400+ bhp YB your talking a fair bit of money and a lot to keep it going..

IIRC the standard Yb had circa 204 and 220bhp and weighs the same as the 4ltr rover..

when the guys put YB's in the tasmins they started going pop quite regularly with much over 300 bhp.

they also proved a real handful to drive with the power delivery..

There is more to power than Big BHP figures... imho it'll cost you more to stick a big power YB in there than a simple swap to a nicely put together 5ltr.. and it'll ruin the resale with a 4 pot..

we've also made well over 350 bhp N/A out of 5ltr rv8's

I know it won't be a cheap exercise, (please remember I'm only getting your opinions here!)but there again finding that sort of power without nos or s/c on a RV8 would be absolutely astronomic (if at all possible). I did think about turbo's on the 400 but I haven't really seen a decent install.

I understand what you are saying re: power delivery but with the right turbo and ecu management that's now available it could be quite progressive.

Yes the noise is the bit I'm worried about, but hearing a cossie on full chat is quite smile inducing to ! perhaps a RV8 sound recording through a bit of high powered ice may do the trick idea

So it it might be possible ....obviously mating up to a T5 should be ok but I need to measure the length of the cossie bell housing to see where that would place it in the engine bay.

I reckon there will be enough room for exhaust and turbo, the cossie manifold runs fwd to the turbo so shoiuldn't be too bad. Need to look at width to.

I have to yes one of the quickest cars point to point out there on our roads just now for the money IMHO easy to get to 350bhp and the grip levels are hudge, only saying this as i owned one and most of my mates are jap car fans and yes very easy to tune to get good BHP And four wheel drive does not bring them down that much. But its not all about point-point speed for me been there done that.... Got board in 8 months 2 years on with the chim not board yet.

Exactly, love the Chimaera , it really has presence. I should be happy with its performance, just want more.

I'm not a fan of engine swaps but it would be more 'honest' to the Chim if you dropped an 4.5 / 4.2 AJP lump in. There are a couple of stunning Griffith AJP's so it will fit in the chassis, you keep the V8, it's a proper TVR engine and would give you the 400bhp... oh and you still be talked to at the TVRCC meets.... smile

I can understand where you are coming from Paul. But reckon I would feel much more at home fiddling with a 4 pot ford engine than a specialist unit like the AJP. If I were to consider that then the Chevy lump would also be in the frame.

I would never sacrifice speed for sound. Speed is short lived and you can get bored of it if it's on it's own. 400bhp is possible with a variety of engines nowadays.

Why not buy a Cerbera?

just sell the chim and buy a cerb. or fit the AJP, you might be thinking its only 350-420 bhp but its the way it delivers it, have a look in the latest issue of sprint an the griff with an AJP, its a true race engine!

I do like the open top, only sat in a couple of cerbs (not driven them) and it felt thoroughly claustrophobic.
