Ok, so I was out in my mates car this evening and he hit a really bad pothole, bursting his tyre, bending the rim of his alloy, and I would expect to find some other damage when we look at it in the daylight!! Has anyone recently claimed compensation from their local authority, or know of someone who has?? The road was in Glasgow, can't remember the street name, my mate wrote it down and has it in the car.

sorry to hear that mate,
if i was you i would go back and take a photo of the pothole with something
like a coke can or similar in the pic to show the size of it.

you will need to contact the council and ask for a claim form.

This pothole would need a 2 litre bottle of Coke to guage the size!!! It was huge!!

I hope he can get something sorted, it now appears the bottom balljoint and track rod end have been damaged!!! This is gonna cost him!!!

Yep, unless it had been previously reported, they won't pay out. I hit a missing drain cover, took out tyre, and alloy, not a penny. Hopefully someone had previously reported it, in your case, otherwise I wouldn't hold your breath.

They wont pay out regardless. I have had 2 claims in. In both instances i took photos ever day for two weeks of said pothole with the days newspaper in it. In the end they said they had been informed of the pothole and had identified it to be repaired. Regardless of how long it takes them it doesn't matter. If its on a list to be done they wont pay out.

What are your thought on this

December 2006 ....Council record access road as 'in poor condition'
December 2007 ...Council record 'repairs should be carried out'
February 2009 ....Council record 'repairs must be carried out'

Inspections are carried out every other year.

They record that a SLC access road does NOT need routine inspections.

What would you do?
Complain?

or pay £1200+ Vat for ONE wheel and get on with life.

What about going through your insurance? Short-term obviously it will be deemed "at fault" but they may have more luck in recouping from the local authority (I'd presume it is something they commonly do??)
