I have the basic remote for shutter release (cable) but was wondering if anyone had come across a remote that enables you to use the auto focus motors to manualy focus? so whilst in 'Live view' you could focus with the remote, bit like when the camera is attached to a laptop with remote software, cable or infrared but cable would be better.

or am i going to have to get a new camera....

Look at the Hahnel range. Even the wireless one can be used in a short wired mode and supports AF and bulb etc. One of them should do what you need.

thanks cirks, had a look but doesn't look like it has independent focus control, it must be possible because a laptop can do it, though the laptop operates it via USB port, remotes have their own connection port, maybe this limits the functionality??

I guess if there were such a thing as a USB connected remote it would have to be powered scratchchin

I have never heard of the thing you're asking about. You might be correct about the connection not allowing such a thing, because even the fancy remotes (like the TC-80 or whatever it's called) with multi-shot settings only ever have to transmit two messages to the camera: start metering/AF and release shutter.

Interestingly there is an application for the iphone that enables wi-fi operation of your DSLR but the camera needs to be tethered to a laptop, sought of defeats the object really, got excited when I first saw it, then oh frown

but it seems the new software on the latest iPhone will enable programmers to make custom cables for direct connection to the camera, which would turn the iPhone into a wired remote enabling alot more control of functions (inc. focusing) which is exactly what I'm after.

you'll need a 40D [discontinued] or a 50D for that + this >> Canon WFT-E3 Wireless File Transmitter

You can wirelessly control the camera (from a limited range though)
