Quick question for those in the know.

Is the engine in both these cars the same?

E36 and early E39 will be M52 (single VANOS) and later E39 will be M52TU (double VANOS). Not sure when the E39 switched over - I would guess 1998?

basic engine block is the same, but exhaust manifold, sump, radiator, will be different.

There wasn't an E34 528i with the M52B28 engine. The front subframe is further forward in the 5 series so the sumps are different compared to the E36 engines.

Thanks for the replies. I'm looking at a E36 328 very soon and that and the other long thread about 328's (found when searching) has answered my questions.
