Picked up my classic tonight. There is a couple of minor problems. One is the glass part of the boot doesnt lock (easy enough fix) and the other is there is a slight knocking noise coming from the rear left of the vehicle over bumps/speed bumps. What could this be?

Check the self leveling unit mounted centrally underneath.

Thanks for the reply. I dont think it is the exhaust as that does seem pretty tight. Im going to have a look for a workshop manual and ill work my way through the list you gave me.

Thanks. Im really enjoying it (apart from the fuel consumption but i knew it was going to be bad). I think im going to get a set of steel wheels with offroad tyres and get new suspension with a lift just so i can have a bit more fun.

Remember to get bigger tyres cos the lift alone will only raise the body not the diffs. I always worry about lifts because I suspect the propshaft won't like the angle of the lift and blow up. They're pretty capable without a lift.

That is lovely.

I know the feeling well about the fuel consumption issues- Took my other half to heathrow yesterday (from just outside Milton Keynes) £50 round trip!!!

That said, i knew the score when i bought it, and to be blunt, havent enjoyed driving this much for ages.
Better still, they look fine with a veneer of grime on them- as mine had due to taking it shooting last week, and treated it to a Polish. Not as in autoglym, but rather the £10 inside and out clean offered by the Poles.
End result is a nice shiny Ranger again, and they still look fantastic (in my eyes at least).
The thing that really did suprise me (having not taken it on a long run) is how bloody quiet they are at speed- sat at 75-80 (at 3000rpm) and it was aas quiet as anything. Bearing in mind that mine is 17 years old, i wasdead chuffed at the whole drive.

Not sure what the knocking noise might be, I have air suspension so slightly different spec. And i wouldnt bother with the lift you have planned, they will go almost anywhere you put them without, and having been in one with a lift, they are unruly on the roads.

Yea they are reasonably quiet at speed. At around 45-50mph there is a bit of tyre noise but that is nothing major and as i spend most of my time under 40mph (not out of choice) its not to much of an issue. Im going to have a look at the suspension on saturday and go from there. I see a few people are reccomending against a lift so i guess ill just leave it.
