Webcams and firewall
Discussion
I have the odd vid conf with a friend in NY using MSMessenger. I can't get the conference working until I turn off my firewall (free ZoneAlarm).
Once I'm connected, I can switch the firewall back on and the conf continues to work fine, but I often forget
Any ideas how to get around this? I have all the ticks in boxes for allowing Messenger to access the web and it works fine if I'm just typing.

Zonealarm only allows the standard ports for MSN messenger by default. You have to manually configure zonealarm to allow video conferencing.
MSN uses ports 6891-6900 to enable File send,
and port 6901 for voice communications. Rather than configuring all these ports manually, on zonealarm you can just allow MSN to access all ports. These instructions may not be for the same versions of ZA and MSN that you have but it'll give you the general idea:
www.compusmart.ab.ca/mikes/lvideo7.html#zapro
I would disable access to all ports for MSN once you have finished the video conference. I think another way to do this is by setting the basic security setting to 'medium' as this will open most ports. Make sure you set it back to high afterwards.
If you use it quite a bit it you may want to consider upgrading for the pro version and their new product IMSecure which is specifically aimed at protecting you from the dangers of Instant Messaging and it makes it loads easier to configure.
