What is that website where you can post what odd-job you need doing (plumbing, lock installation etc) and various local contractors will quote you for the work?

Ah, sweet. Anyone had a better experience than Penny?

ETA - how much is the average rate for installing a chubb lock in a front door?

Isn't that just a case of drilling a big hole and then fixing it with 4 screws?

Give it a go yourself, go on, it will be an experience and you can't get it that wrong...

From the trader side of it, we got a job from it, quite a big one as well.

Most of them are not worth it. A lot of people are asking for far too much for way too little.

An example is a chap who wanted his living room carpet done for a fiver. Strangely that was on there for quite some time hehe

I put £75 for a door lock to be fitted - seem reasonable?

I reckon so, I'm prety rubbish with that kind of thing but I've managed that before so they can't ask too much.

Shame you're not closer to me because I know a great odd job man that would do it cheap but he doesn't drive (silly boy) so he needs to be picked up for jobs or he gets a train to london and walks.

That looks a bit mental written down but thats how he works.

Might do. Hoping for enough quotes that the price might come down from there. I set it quite high to get the bites.

I really dislike calling tradesmen because often by smaller jobs are the ones they dont really want.

Those sites where you ask builders to quote can be good because you can find a one man band who might be a bit of a gem

For example I had 2 guys round who changed a door barrell lock, added some door stoppers to my PVC door and also went away for about an hour trying to find me a new handle (but couldnt)- charged me £15 labour for 2 of them for approx 2 hours.

job was a goodun as well - they also showed me a way or two to save money whilst other traders were quoting 3x as much!
