I now need to get shot of my 335d touring.
the car is good but needs two front tyres, has a couple of marks on 3 of the wheels, the odd stone chip and scratch. To get it into tip top condition will cost me about £1k. I also have the outstanding washer dropping off issue. Which I am waiting for BMW to come back to me about or which I will have to shell out £300 + vat to get sorted.

I have outstanding finance of £23k on the car, BMW are offering me £21k.
I need to get out of it, it is early so I accept there is a shortfall.

The question is, do I get the work done and advertise it privately and try and get more than £22k or just give it back and let them worry about it?

Answers on a postcard!

Accept the loss and give it back imo...not easy to sell privately at >£20k imho.

You will sell it quite easily so long as it's in good nick as they are an excellent, in demand used buy.

Its a gamble though, given the O/P is going to have to spend £1000 on it to get it into good nick.

That makes the dealer offer as good as £22K.

Theres not too many people willing to shell out £22K on a private sale.

I guess he could stick it on pistonheads etc, for a week and see if he gets any response though?

When I was looking last year, every decently priced one was being sold almost immediately.
I eventually bought privately but paid a little more than I wanted to and the seller got less than he wanted.

Tricky one.

Had a quick look on Autotrader and I reckon you could get well over £22k for it (although I dont see your mileage ?) maybe as much as £25k. (Although the ones on there are mostly from garages rather than private sales).

However...

Wouldn't you need to pay off the existing finance before selling it on - thus giving you a 'cash flow' issue ?

Also if you buy it you are taking on all the risk (and hassle) - maybe not the best idea ?

(I am assuming there is a financial motivation behind this - if not, apologies).

I had it advertised for £24500 in November and did not get a lot of serious interest. The fact that it does not have nav does not help (msport, black, leather, usb, bluetooth, privacy glass and adaptive lights) The miles are 25500 ish.

The motivation is that I don't need it, the payments are £640 per month.... I have a year left on the deal.

I could cope with the cashflow short term, however I suspect to get a decent price I will have to make it perfect, shove tax on it and advertise it for at least a month to give people time to come and look. So realistically I'm looking at £1k to make it right (forgetting the headlamp thing for a moment) and a couple of payments of £640 which is £2280. The dealer is looking like a better bet wink

Have you offered it to any other dealers/traders with the view of maybe getting a better offer?

sounds like a cracking car, i'd be interested in taking it of your hands if it was another 6 months down the line.

as someone said, selling cars over 20k private is difficult. but it is possible.

i like the idea of buyer/sellers feeling the benefit, rather than dealers.

Without Nav let the dealer have it.

Call all the main groups and ask for their buyers mobile, then ask them to underwrite it, be honest with the condition and see what the best price is.

I have sold loads like this and all have been pretty much as good as any private sale. On a £20k car you need to be at least £2k cheaper than dealers, and there will always be one dealer that is £2k more than another dealer, so you can normally get about the same money.

Selling cars privately are never a problem regardless of price, however, they have to be mint or a very desirable spec.
