Just got off the phone to Elephant...when I bought my Chim it had a roll bar in it.. didn't think anything of it..def didn't think about telling the insurance company...anyway phoned up to add some bits to the policy (ACT..Mark Adams chip) not to bothered about them.. But when I mentioned the roll bar...bloody hell...£111 extra a month.. Thats a insurance premium of 2000 a year..It would seem all insurance companies are the same.. If you mention a roll bar (which I thought was a safty device) they say "Mmmm anyone who thinks they need a roll bar must be driving round like a loon" Not "What a good idea seeing as the TVR is built out of paper mache and needs something like a roll bar to keep the occupant from removing the top of his head in the event of a flip"
Anyone out there found a nive insurance company willing to be sensible about it.

Have you tried the TVR specialists?
I'm with Sunninghills - they include trackday cover (with an increased excess of course) so I guess they must have come across cars with roll bars fitted.

...I have a roll-bar on mine. It was there when I bought it and it never even occurred to me that it could make any difference to the insurance!

This is total stupidity!

What if it had been fitted at the factory as an optional extra, is it then still classed as an aftermarket item?

Theres plenty of TVR dedicated insurance compnies out there?
I pay around £570 with full no claims. This will include track days. All I do is inform them of what track days I'm doing and all they do is increase the excess, not the premium.

But what age are you.. being under 25 (24) Insurance companys take a dim view off us Boys.. They think we are all ..Burburry Cap wearing..Reebok Classic ..Shell suit kids who are running around in dads motor trying to max it up...but when we get to 25 we all of a sudden become men... pipe smoking..slipper wearing men who woundn't dare break the speed limit because of their grand old age.

Ha! I tried an on-line quote with Elephant but could not find my TVR ('98 4.0 Chim) on their list. I selected a '97 on 4.5 and got a quote that was not much cop. So I left it at that.

Today Elephant rang me up as a followup to my quote. Obviously they wanted my business. I talked to them and explained the problem with the price and the model selection. After checking the woman on the phone said that the 4.0 Chim was not listed because their underwriting department had decided not to cover it.

I sent an email to sales@elephant.com and got much the same reply.

Go figure!

Disconcerting, given that my 4.0 98 Chim is insured with Elephant! When I got quotes, it was the same amount for the 4.0, 4.5 & 5.0! This was back in September though...

Crikey, you move fast TomBob. Only last week you were asking questions on here about how to get the cats/pre-cats taken out and would the ECU re-mapping? Now you've gone and got the lot! So come on, what's it like to drive now? Pleased with it? Rich...

Bizzare. I suspect it's more to do with their car database. I suspect they buy this in along with the claim satistics...
