Can I just cancel my BT contract?
Discussion
Just wondering what the consequences will be if I just cancel the direct debit for my phone bill and broadband.
I called them in October to cancel, and they convinced me to keep broadband and a landline. I've never used my landline (it doesn't even have a phone plugged into it) and the broadband has now been offline for 2 weeks.
My gripe is thus, every evening for two weeks I have sat on hold to report the problem for over an hour and given up without even speaking to an 'advisor'.
Am I within my rights to tell the
s where to stick it?
I could just use a PAYG dongle for the odd bit of browsing and email I use at home...

If its been out of service for 2 weeks, i would guess that they are in breach of contract- not supplying the service you subscribed to?
My dear old mum had a similar problem last year, and wrote them a letter stating their breach of contract, and it was cancelled with no fuss.
Good luck.

If they're anything like Phodavone, they won't listen yo you, threaten you with court action & debt collectors, then put a black mark on your credit history. Believe me it isn't worth it.
Pricks. Can I make a complaint to Ofcom or something? They don't provide a service!Emsman said:

Great news. Do you know which department she wrote to? I would imagine it wasn't customer services. My dear old mum had a similar problem last year, and wrote them a letter stating their breach of contract, and it was cancelled with no fuss.

Bear in mind also, that she spoke to the BT helpline- straight through to india- and had the misfortune of:
Sorry, i cant understand what you are saying.
You are a racist.
No, i simply cant understand you
Then you are a racist.
etc etc

Read the terms and conditions and then you'll know if you can cancel. If you can't then you'lll have to live with it. End of story.
I know when we had trouble with BT (trying to get them to re-connect a line when we moved into our new house) I ended up speaking to India quite a lot. They fobbed us off with the "Someone will call you back in 24 hours" excuse, never to give us a call. I kept a log of every time I rang and then just kept asking to speak to their manager until I eventually got someone in the UK. Moaned like hell to them and they sorted it out.

I had to call BT a couple of nights ago when my broadband connection went down. First they assume it's your router at fault, so you have to go through that routine before they finally admit that the line might be down....Sorry, i cant understand what you are saying.
You are a racist.
No, i simply cant understand you

But the biggest frustration is not being able to understand the almost impenetrable Indian accents..
"wadeeness". I'm sorry, I didn't catch that. "wadeeness". No, sorry, would you mind repeating that? "WADEENESS". Oh, What DNS number am I using? Is that what you said? "YES".
The call took over one hour, changing every single setting, problem not resolved but broadband magically restored in the morning.
When will BT move their call centres back to the UK? I dread having to call India.

A moderator (BT person) will pick it up and should help.
I wouldn't just stop paying the DD - it'll set off a train of events that could end up with debt collectors chasing you and a black mark on your sredit rating.
All the broadband stuff used to be handled separately in the UK but I think they've merged it now.
Apparently sending a *brief* email to ian.livingston@bt.com works quite well!

GLOL, this reminds me - our phone line hasn't accepted phonecalls or been able to make them since before November last year.
Their online report system is pants. It just seems to be a countdown until it comes up with the legend: "This fault is now closed and we confirmed with you that you were happy with the repair within the last seven days." No communication with me has happened on any level since day 1 of reporting the fault (November 4th!). I expect they've left a message on the Callminder service.
But it's ok, the bill arrived the other day.
Bunch of idiots.

If you cancel the DD the next payment will be returned by your bank, you'll get a letter advising you that the payment has been r/d'd and asking you to make payment by alternative means, you may also be charged for the pleasure. Assuming you don't pay you may get a reminder or the account will be closed you'll then get a bill for whatever is outstanding and then eventually passed to a debt collector.
alternatively, next time you're speaking to someone ask them to go through the escalation procedure, which as a quality registered company they are obliged to inform you of, follow the escalation procedure i.e. if the person you're speaking to can't satisfy you they have to escalate it to their manager. Make sure you get names at each stage. If someone refuses to escalate remind them of the escalation procedure.
