Hi All

Is there anyone on here that has the standard G50.01 or G50.03 with the taller 5th gear fitted?

Your experiences of every day use etc would be much appreciated.

i have - not been driving much so far but there is a larger drop in revs, for fast country road driving you would not need the 5th anyway. For hihgway cruisibg perfect spinand obviously top speed

Lucky had one in his for a while but found the jump from 4th to 5th to large with the engine dropping below its power band on the shift so it just bogged.
He took it out and sold it.

By all accounts it is quite easy to fit as it sits in the very end housing.

you can get one in the states for the g50..

ive got g50/52 box which ghas the high gear as standard.

never use 5th except on the motorways due to the engine,

1-2 in town,1-3 on country roads and 4th sometimes on main. 5th too high except on motorways but at 75mph i get 20+ to the gallon.. great mod and apparently not too big of a job to do once box out.... ill email someone if you are interested in a secondhand set of taller gears(he wants to put his box back to standard)

I had the taller 5th gear and would recommed it unless you are aiming for track work, it makes mway cruising so much gentler and more economic. Fitting it is dead easy if you have a 2 legged gear puller rather than a 3 legged one, takes about 30 mins after the first time, just take the rear clip off, the rear box support, drain the box, put a large white sheet down to catch the bits of the synchro which will inevitably spring out first time, make sure you put things out in the exact order and orientation they came out in, and mark the position of the selector arm on the rod before removing it.....dead easy rolleyes and if anyone wants to buy a set of the taller gears, I have a set.More comprehensive instructions can be put together if needed.

Thanks for the replies guys.

It seems that those that have fitted them say that they are good at making long journeys more relaxed but then say they have removed them or have them for sale. Now I'm confused! If they are an improvement why remove them?

Does everybody wish they had a six speed which gives the urgency in lower gears but also has the extra gear to avoid the drop out of the power band when changing into top?

Reason I removed the gear was because I was spending most of my time on track, and it was too big a step from 4th to 5th. Gear box is for sale soon and so thought I would keep it in standard form for sale. If I wasn't aiming for track work, I would have left it in place, hope that's not confusing.

I have the six speed box and the gear set we are talking about will also fit my box as an uprated sixth gear.
I would buy the one on offer but I've spent all my spare cash on the new venture.

Which 6 speed box have you got?

What does it give you in mph/1000 rpm?

Paul

PS Hope new venture is going well. Are you having a stand at Stoneleigh?

Just to confirm. I asked PowerHaus to pick me a 4th and a 5th that would compliment the std 1,2 and 3 gears. For road use it was perfect. For track use too big a jump from 3rd to 4th and 4th to 5th.

Track use go std G5003. For eco cruising, buy an RS6 evil

Or just get one of these bad boys....so, still give you vids!! wink

mph/1000
5.9
10.9
15.9
20.2
24.3
29.6

We plan too do Stoneleigh if we can find the funding. Not sure about a stand, more likely a gazebo in the back car park.

How do you find it compared to your Ultima? Easier to drive just as quickly on track?

It certainly looks after you a great deal more than the Ult. I kept the namby-pamby SC and TC on as it was raining. Any little twitch, or provoked deviation from the line, was quickly snapped back into shape. In terms of ease of drive, you still have to remember the weight is in the 'wrong' place so lifting off mid corner become a health hazard rather than in the Ult (or the MR2) where it was used to rotate the body into the corner if I was in the wrong place.

I also found the ABS highly intusive.

Acceleration and braking aren't in the same ball park. There is no kick in the back or straining against the belts under braking. That'll be the 300kg difference in weight and the Ultima's lowered COG married to the wide section tyres assisted with the heavy lump sat right between them.

But I doesn't half 'flow' round the circuit, the noise is hypnotic and it is a very docile comfy road car. And the best bit? I didn't pop the bonnet once the whole day!!

The Ult was always an event. The GT3 is just another day at the office............

That is a nice even spread of gears. They look as though they would be fine on the track and give a top speed of just over 200 at 7K rpm.

Is your reason for wanting a higher top gear more relaxed cruising?

Is the box out of a 993 turbo / 993 GT2?

I intend to use mine on track but don't want that big drop when changing into top but I still want a relaxed motorway cruise.

LuckyP
I know a GT3 would be the sensible choice but I need a big 4x4 for everyday driving so it would only get marginally more use than an Ultima. Plus I fancy the challenge of building.

.........you just need to change all the gear ratios then, taller 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th are all available, about 600 quid per gear! Plus labour for a full strip (the lower gear sets being more involved to change)

Don't get me wrong. You MUST do the Ultima thing. Nothing comes close to building and driving a car like and Ult!

Just like everything in life, the gears are a compromise. Take your time to absorb the comments, understand what you truley want to get a kick out of:

- Quick 0-150
- Motorway cruising at 3000rpm
- Top speed over a 1.5mile drag
- Top speed on autobahn
- Perfect track gears
- No drop below 5,500 on track
etc...

The combinations are endless. But not having one of these will irk you more than having the others.

For me I went to a spread to get me to 200mph. I did 2 things wrong. Get too greedy on gears with a neeless theoretical of 227mph (should have been 205-210 at 7000rpm) and I didn't understand the need for 650+ hp to get to 200 with limited fuss.

I settled in the end for my old stock G50 Gears which give you sensational acceleration through the gears and are IMHO, perfect for track.

Down side is you go deaf and skint an 90 leps cruising speed at about 4500(a guess )RPM.

Good luck!

You are right. I want everything on your list and I too think that just over the double ton will be sufficient. I would probably only do it once and scare myself silly. But with creeping old age I can ill afford to hasten the degeneration of my hearing any faster than nature is determined to achieve.

I intend to fit an LS7 with either 650 or 700 hp so I'm hoping that would be plenty of grunt.

So you gave the povwer to go 200, but not the gears in a stock G50 (at 7000rpm).

If you go the 5spd G5003 route you can:

1) Poor mode - change the 5th only. Big drop between 4th and 5th. You'll kick yourself you didn't do more.
2) Medium mode - go for an inbetweeny mode where you drop a mid gear between stock 3rd and new 5th. You'll kick yourself again for having two areas of high rev jumps!!
3) Filthy rich mode - a whole new set. Do away with useless first, get your gear changes exactly where your power is, make 200 with ease, still have a road comfort trackable car with all the gears at all the revs you could ever need.

Your call.

Pete

IMHO you really should consider changing 1st out as otherwise you effectively have lost a gear and will fiodn yourself starting out in 2nd.

My G50/52 has been custom fitted with a stock 2nd used as a first; Ratios are 2.06; 1.50; 1.13; 0.86; 0.68 with a 3.44 R&P. This allows me to hit 62 mph at 5500 rpm in first for a no shift quick 0-60 time and provides a theoretical top speed when the rev limiter cuts in at 6k is 206 mph, with a reasonable spread in between.

Even with the above 1st gearing at a local hill climb event I found starting in second was providing better traction and getaways.
