Just noticed Cacatous' thread on gearbox probs that turned out to be clutch fingers....anyway, think I've got a real gearbox issue, what do you think?

I'm driving on the M3 this afternoon on my way home from a meeting - in fifth gear at about 80, when a vibration/rattling noise gets louder and louder. I slow down, change down to fourth, and it seems better. However, when I go to change back in to fifth, its graunching badly and sounds horrendous!! So I get back down to fourth and proceed gently home using fourth gear and below.

Have I been struck by the dreaded fifth gear collapse??
What's it likely to cost to fix??

Love the car, but seem to be spending serious wonga every other month at the moment - had it a year and current expenditure on repairs and maintenance is north of five big ones. Still, I guess if I keep replacing things at this rate, I'll have a brand new one worth £40,000 by the middle of next year!!

any advice, chaps??

cheers

Hi Sean

Sorry to hear this, have a word with Yellow Peril
www.pistonheads.com/gassing/profile.asp?memberId=11499

Their car lost 5th in August, so they should be able
to give you some pointers, Pauline & Ray are always
very helpful.

Best of luck.

Go create some weather...

Same thing happened to me yesterday. Lost 5th gear in the morning. Reverse by lunchtime. The whole lot by the afternoon.
Expensive month :/

Damn! That's harsh...

These gearboxes are near bulletproof so maybe a clutch problem like mine...

Tell me about it! The clutch was only replaced in October, so it's definitely the 'box I reckon...

...where's that number for Andy at APM? Oh, what a surprise, it's imprinted on my memory!!

cheers (ish)

Mmmm, sorry to hear that Stephen - how far (miles or time) did you get between fifth going and the rest disappearing too?? (Just trying to work out whether to try and drive it down to APM rather than have to call a lowloader!!)

Sounds like teeth have been stripped from fifth gear; I believe it is known to be the weakest in the 'box.

Unfortunately that might mean that the shards of metal have had a change to circulate amongst the other gears - could be in need of a rebuilt box.

However, I am by no means an expert - I'm sure Andy can resolve it for you.

I lost 5th a fortnight after I got my Cerb, a circlip had "fallen off" I thought well i've still got the other 4 to get me round till TVR could look at her, until aforementioned circlip took the clutch, flywheel and consequently the starter with it too!! hmmm, maybe flat bed is the way to go afterall

Thanks guys - think you're right about the teeth stripping off fifth gear - certainly what it sounded like!

...and a lowloader down to APM sounds best if it might save (some of) the rest of the gears. They all worked for the rest of my journey home last night, although it did sound a bit gritty!!

Anyone know the cost of either a strip down and rebuild with a new fifth gear, or a replacement/recon 'box???

Cheers

Hi scotty, hope your break in NZ is going well!

At least I get to drive HER new car - M5 Touring - in the meantime...

Hi Sean,
sorry to hear your woe..

I wonder just how these gearboxes got the reputation for being so bullet proof..our g/box was replaced 2000, at Mole Valley, £750 for factory recon unit.

I suppose close ratios would be an expensive addition, if you're having the thing rebuilt..?
