IRA Punishment Shootings.
Discussion
Listening to the news on the radio this morning about the "knee cappings" that have been occurring over in Northern Ireland.
Now I'm sure they have oversimplified things somewhat, but they were saying that the "knee cappings" were in response to "anti social behaviour", if this is the case, can we have some over here please???
Maybe it will stop the local steak & kidney lock opening devices dropping there Special Brew cans in the street & kicking over bins, vandalising cars etc as they pass through the village on their way to their "affordable housing".

The number of punsihment shootings for anti-social behaviour has dropped massively since the ceasefires and various decomissioning acts but do seem to be making a comeback. One reason is that the dissident elements who are doing the shootings are seeking favour amongst the local population in these areas where the targets operate, the locals being generally supportive of the shootings - even though they most likely don't support the overal political aims of those carrying out the shootings.
But I would say there are two overriding facts about punishment shootings:
They aren't given out for nothing
They are not effective in stopping anti-social behaviour.

Thugs handing out punishment. Do you really want to have this kind of thing in your neighbourhood?
Nope, but the priciple, such as in Singapore where public lashings are administered for littering etc would get my vote.nonegreen said:

Give the police powers to do this over here. I guarantee that all this crap with anti social behaviour will disappear. People who are doing the anti social behaviour know that they'll probably get a little bit of a spanking, told not to do it again and sent on their way. So the IRA have in theory a good idea, but it needs a lot of honing.

I think the idea of people policing their own communities, but it is open to abuse. I'm sure there are better ways of making a point about people's behaviour than shooting them through the knees.
But people understand pain, it's real, and if it works then BINGO.Would be many times more effective than a piece of paper saying "now there, you must stop being naughty or we'll make you tidy some flowerbeds"

I heard the news article (R1 Newsbeat?) too and came to conclusion that their journalists really are third rate at best. They always report stories well behind everyone else. That article was more of a cheap political shot (pardon the pun) at the police rather than good balanced journalism.
Punishment beatings aren't a problem to the normal man in the street or even the chav or petty criminal. It is done to persistant scumbags which should be shot in the head rather than the knees. It's done to the person who steals from his own neighbours. Does punishment beatings stop them stealing? No, probably not, but once they've been shot they tend not to do it again.
I've worked all over the world and have always felt safer walking the streets in Belfast than anywhere, including during the troubles.
