Hi everyone,

I'm thinking of relocating to Edinburgh and was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to recommend some nice areas to live in. I want to be fairly close to the city centre and after a nice safe and lil bit posh area!...

Thanks...

Cramond, Craigs Mount, Silverknowes etc...

Depends what you're looking for... House, townhouse, big posh flat?

Hey Spacegrey

Good places are the South side, basically Morningside, Marchmont (The grange if you want to live next door to Sir Fred), Newington, Merchiston. All very nice areas and about 15-30mins walk from the city centre.

I guess it depends what kind of property you're after.

Nice mews property in Stockbridge or Comely Bank, flat in the New Town, house on Ann Street......

When I first moved to Edinburgh I lived in Marchmont, and I thought it a great place to live: not too far from centre, decent shops etc. I'd definitely recommend it, as I would Morningside (a bit further out than Marchmont), Meadows, Bruntsfield. I now live to the north of the centre: Stockbridge I would also say is a great pat of town, also Comely Bank, Canonmills, New Town. Most places of that distance away from the centre are OK smile

I will recommend Linlithgow as it is only 20 mins commute from Edinburgh by main line train. The property prices are a bit cheaper. The schools are better(we even have a deaf one).

Thanks for the replies guys!!!!...much appreciated...was thinkin of getting a mortgage with my GF for about £220k and get a property...Flat or house, I'm not too bothered...as long as the area is safe (no chavs etc), close to the city centre (20 mins walk max) and the property itself is fairly modern....

Is £220k enough for me to get a "nice" place in a "nice" area?

That should be enough for a good flat in Marchmont, which is probably the best area based on what you say. Trouble there is parking, the streets are overloaded with cars, in some places they are double parking overnight! Comely Bank should be doable on that budget as well, but again there are parking problems as there will be in any near central area.

If you haven't seen it already, *most* property in Edinburgh is listed on http://www.espc.com/

When I lived there (~20 years ago), Marchmont was a mix of decent grown-up people, and noisy feckless students living 10 to a flat. Like me.

Is it still, or not so much?

I think since the property boom there are less students, especially in the better streets, Spottiswood, Lauderdale etc.

Looks alright. Kitchen's a bit pokey and it's probably north / north-east facing but it's a nice area.

Just go and see lots of flats. Most will be open viewing Thursday 6-8 and Sunday 2-4 so just make a list and charge round as many as you can.

Also try www.globrix.com - ESPC will have 80% of all property on it, but Globrix mops up the rest, Retties, Savilles etc.

I bought a 2 bed flat in Newington with garage and I didn't pay much over £220k, 3 years ago.
