I've got the annual conference to attend in Vegas in April, I'll be staying out for a couple of days post the conference. After 9 days of Vegas I think I will be sick of the place so I was wondering if there are any good day trips out of the city?

I've done the Hoover Dam before, so I was thinking of heading west to Death Valley, but I'm not sure if there is anything there. Does anybody have any ideas as to how to spend a day or 2 days / 1 night out of the city?

Well obviously the Grand Canyon, which (depending on which Rim you head for) is only a couple of hours' drive from the Strip. Red Rock Canyon is amazing also, Death Valley is a spectacle but I wouldn't say it's much more than that (ie you look at it and then wonder what else there is).

Boulder is a dump so don't bother with that. Some of the less touristy Native American reserves are filled with amazing scenery and only about 90 mins from it all.

That's all I can help with cos that's all I visited last time I was there!

Thanks for that, I should have added I've been to the Canyon as well. A couple of years back we drove from Arizona up to Vegas, hence why I've done the canyon and dam.

Will look into the reservations though.

The Sky Diving to the South East of Las Vegas is good, you get a pretty good view from up there!

The Indian Skywalk is a bit of a drive, some on unsealed roads, but is very good.

(The extra to go on the glass walkway is worth it to do once, butI wouldn't pay it a second time...)

I'm tempted as I love the city and have friends there, but the show ends Thursday night and I fly out Sunday night, so it would be a whistle stop and I doubt I'm going to want to drive 6 hours after the show. So it's a little too far frown

What about looking at the Hoover Dam from another angle, on Lake Mead.

Got any more details about this? Would like to give it a go, any website, or address etc?
Cheers

I went there in 2007,
We took a helicopter over the grand canyon.
Flew through the canyon and then we spent a few hours at a ranch, got dinner there, and done some activites, before watching a "gun fight" and getting the helicopter back to Las Vegas.
Was Absolutely brill!

We also did indoor skydiving, which is located near the top end of the strip, not a day trip but amazing.

More half a day, but they have a few shooting ranges- Las vegas authorities are relaxed on this- literally turn up pay your money and choose what you want :-), probably the only time ill get to shoot a gun, I had fun with a 9mm Baretta the police use and a machine gun hehe (suprisingly the former was more fun as with the machine gun you are soon out of inclusive bullets).

Mark, not sure if you've tried any of the following before now?

-The Gun Store
-Dune Buggy Racing
-Red Rock Canyon (I much prefer this to the grand canyon. It's much more attractive and if you're feeling up to it, you can walk the treks around Red Rock)
-Death Valley

Obviously the Gun Store and Dune Buggying won't take up a whole day but they are great fun to do.

Hi Rob, I've done the gun thing before and it left me feeling strangely cold I have to say...

The other stuff all sounds good though, do you have any details about the Dune Buggy racing? Also, with Death Valley is there actually anything there, I'm assuming no!

I'll find some details about the buggying when I get home.

As for Death Valley, well, no there isn't anything to do as such but there is plenty to see if that makes any sense? We drove to Badwater, the Devils golfcourse and a few other places but I wasn't feeling too great and the low altitude gave me a major headache so I stayed in the comfort of the car for the last 2-3 stops whilst in Death Valley.

If anything, it was a case of us saying "We're in Vegas, we have to do Death Valley". I still enjoyed what I saw though. smile

Eta - Almost forgot, we took a helicopter ride over the grand canyon and stopped on a ranch for lunch. The helicopter ride was great, the ranch was a little on the odd side and the food was far from great BUT I did get to ride a horse around the Arizona desert which was fantastic.

When I go back I'd love to ride a horse in the desert again but not as part of the ranch/canyon day trip.
