Tips for the over 50's
Discussion
My sister in law (admin/pensions) was made redundant when her employer went bust last summer. She got another job in admin job at a hotel. Looks now like the hotel only wanted someone over Chrimbo and were hoping things wouod pick up, but they haven't and she is back looking. She is finding that the agencies only seem to be putting up graduates, and as a woman in her 50's doesn't think her experience counts for much against someone with leters after their name ( which my experience tells me is hog wash).
Any tips for the over 50's in the current market?
Agencies are a complete and utter waste of time, I don't know of anyone who has actually got a worthwhile job out of one.
They only seem interested if they can get you on temporary assignments as that is were they make their money and easy money it is too.
£7 per hour for you and a £10 per hour charge to the client, £3 per hour profit x 40 hour week = £120 per week for a couple of phone calls, you only need 50 temps on your books to be raking it in.
Best advice as stated above is to approach companies directly.

I was made redundant early December and am 50. I apply for suitable jobs, but am realistic that my chances of being employed full-time again are very remote. I'm currently redecorating my house with a view to sell next month...with the vague notion of moving down South, buying a boat and setting up sightseeing/fishing trips for tourists. Alternatively, if it takes longer to sell than hoped - take time out to teach English as a foreign language to mature students in China in September.
I think you have to accept that once you hit 50 you are going to struggle to find work, and the easiest way forward is to work for yourself.
