My Father had a Nikon SLR back then and was wondering if someone could ID it for me from this description.

All I remember about it was it was black, had a large viewfinder on top which was like another square block on top of the camera's body,

journalists everywhere seemed to have at least one around their neck.

and I seem to recall it cost an arm and a leg new at the time, but was lovely and light to handle

can anyone offer a suggestion as to the model

F, F2 or F3 I guess. Probably the last if it was new in the 80s.

And before you ask, Canon had F1!

I had an F5 (I think) it was the top of the amateur range in the mid eighties, it was also crap and I was glad to be rid of it.
I still have my old Canon A1 which is a fantastic camera.

edited, It was an F501 not F5

What about F3HP?

Definitley available used, F2 Photomatics are still relatively common and F3HP's are available. The best news is that as they are film they go for not too much money

Glad you corrected that! F5 was the pro model, I had it and it was fab. Only thing that let it down was that it used film. Part ex'd it to buy a D1

Wonder if they ever considered a digital back for it?
