Help - Front Wheels Locked

Chaps.....help needed again.

Went to pull the car out of the garage this morning (and a couple of months of not being driven) and both front wheels are locked solid. The car is kept in a carcoon and I dont put the handbrake on....I just leave it in first gear.

I've had this before on previous cars before and reversing it usualy does the trick and unlocks the pads from the discs. This isn't working despite multiple attempts today. I think part of the problem here is because the car is in a carcoon, all its doing is dragging the rubber sheet its sitting along with the front wheels.

Any advice ? If I take the front wheels off is there a manual method for unlocking the pads from the discs???

i think your best bet would be to get it on sold ground out of the carcoon.

I'd guess you could first make sure you chock all three other wheels, jack it up and then get a torque wrench on the hub nut? Alternative is to just tap out the brake pads once you have the wheel off (probably easier)

Alternativly you could get two of these to move it out of the cacoon?

So managed to free up the disc but had to take off the caliper to do so. Half of the brake pad is literally glued to the back of the disc. Even belting it with a screw driver doesn't get it off ! I'm thinking at the moment that I'll have to take the disc off (how do I do this? Is it simply the big centre bolt ???) and get it reskimmed.......

Don't know if this salt related but thought keeping it in a carcoon would stop this sort of crap

It sounds like you put the car away with wet discs, if you have taken the calliper off there is nothing else stopping the disc coming off, just tap it with a mallet

If I put mine away after I've washed it, even leaving the handbrake off, the discs still sticks. That's why I always take it for a quick wizz up the road and back to dry off the discs.

don,t forget to clean up the mateing surfaces when you put it all back together with a little bit of copper grease to stop the disc rusting onto the hub !!!

I hardly ever take the car out in the wet and last time it was dry. I've just never come across a brake pad cementing itself to a disc like this before.



Anyway I now need to order new brake pads (assuming I can get these bloody things off my discs and dont end up buying new discs as well) ....these were DS2500's......any recent recommendations??

Do a search lots of info, you can now get grooved disc which ars supposed to be a improvement ..

If only the previous clown had followed your guidance......drivers side came straight off once the caliper was released however the passenger side is a different story. Despite a good half an hour of various levels of force being used it wont budge.....hoping a night drowned in WD40 might help

Yep common problem !!!! I normaly find the "tap and turn" approach normaly works !!!!!

Hmmmm WD40 on a porous disc........that'll be going in the bin then!

I bit of blowtorch action is always worth a try. If not a bath of hot water. As Adrian says nothing oily should go near it.

Cheers Phil. And thanks for you and Adrian not completely flaming me for my almost complete lack of mechanical knowledge (discs are porous ?). At least I give it a go I guess

......now where is that Ebay listing for new front discs......

Got a pair of second hand ones you can have if you want them , pretty good order .
