Evening all,

I'm after a good but cheapish watch for wearing to work. I'm in a joinery workshop, and the dust and general working conditions seem to kill cheap watches very quickly. 2 months is my personal record so far!biggrin
but these have been the less than £30 ones from M&S, Next etc
Have up to £120 to spend, preferably less. Looking for a metal bracelet, no digital watches please.
What do you recommend?

Thanks

Matt

Is it knocking it that's killed the watches so far? Any reason for not digital?

g-shock.

The only watch that has withstood my fathers punisment of them. Like you he worked on mahines etc a lot and always broke normal ones.

Can't believe I'll be the first to suggest a Monster or a Neo-Monster / mini-Monster / whatever. Proper mechanical movement but tough watch.

However if it will be seeing *really* heavy duty, then you need G-shock, but along with G-shock comes quartz and digital.

There's only *so* tough you can make a mechanical movement.

Thanks for the replies so far,
The watches have died for a series of reasons, a couple for getting knocked, a couple for straps breaking.
But mostly as dust seems to get under the glass making it impossible to see!
No digital watches as I've never really liked them.
I've had a look at g-shocks, but they are too chunky for my liking.
I think something quite slim would be less likely to get knocked etc

Thinking about it a little more,
All of the watches up until now have been a metal bracelet, and always get scratched.
Maybe I will look for a leather strap instead.
How do the seiko monsters look with a leather strap?

I think someone here has an Orange Monster on a Toshi strap...

I was a guillotine operator in a printers and my daily watch was a casio oceanus. Rubbed it up and down a steel bed a day or two a week for 4 years and although not as dusty an environment as a sawmill, there was a lot of fine particle dust. No issues whatsoever, coupla foties I've just taken

So a quick google revealed this http://www.watchsavings.com/Casio-Oceanus-Mens-Wat... the black face date only version of my watch for £41 plus import+del! I really cannot stress the build quality of this watch. Yes it's a quartz, but it has a solid link SS bracelet and is a fair old heft on your wrist, also a crystal so thick I reckon it would deflect a bullet.

This fellow watch enthusiasts, is the bargain of the year. Buy one and tell me it's not an incredible piece for the money especially if you can get it delivered for less than £75.
EDIT: Just tried to buy it and it won't accept the Wife's debit card or paypalbanghead

Am I the only one anal enough to read the OP and think that wearing a watch in the workshop is a bad idea, and he should invest in a wallclock? I know H&S is dull, but I like having my hands on my wrists; if it gets caught on machinery your hand's away, if it's a metal band/casing don't get it anywhere near electrical work(obviously does not apply to OP), and if you're trying to produce a decent finish the watch'll scratch it.

Apologies for the dullness but not the safety.soapbox

I suspect your problem is that the watches you have used so far are not waterproof, and therefore are not dust proof. Get something with 100m WR and you should be OK.

(I have one in perfect condition that I was considering selling on at a much lower price than that!)

Analogue G-Shock. You won't kill it without explicitly trying to.

I think I have finally settled on a Seiko monster variant.
I'm just currently trying to find out all of the models available, what a minefield!
Are there any places recomended to buy from online?

Thanks

The link I provided is a pretty good guy to deal with. They were never sold in the UK so you have to import it.
