Coolant change on a Puma
Discussion
Hi folks,
One of the coolant pipes split on Mrs.NCoT's Puma the other day so I replaced it and refilled with coolant today, but a couple of questions:
- drained the coolant from the radiator drain hole and heater set to hot, but when I came to top up I could only get 4 litres in (6l capacity). I know there will have been airlocks until it was run, but I'm presuming I didn't get all the coolant from the heater matrix - what did I do wrong?
- ran it with the coolant res. cap off to get it up to temp and get bubbles out quickly, damn thing turned into a geyser and spouted coolant mix all over that area of the engine (accessory belt and cambelt (but cambelt is under a plastic cover that looks pretty sealed, think there's a gasket of some sort on there)) - I know coolant isn't too good for belts but is it a real worry? They were both replaced a week ago!!! Next time I will put the cap back on earlier

similar thing happens on my old golf-a fair bit of the old coolant remains in the engine when i've drained it from the radiator hose,i suppose it stays in the engine block somewhere.
antifreeze will be harmless to rubber stuff, but any coolant thats been spilled in the engine bay i'd swill away with water to stop the antifreeze attacking any paintwork its landed on.
