I had an argument with a woman the other day who said she went running every day and only ate 1200 calories yet still had a BMI of 29.2 (and allegedly weighed 9 stone, more like 15 stone) and she hadn't lost any weight.
Having just dropped 5 stone myself by just cutting down on food I called bullst but apparently I was wrong

This is the problem - obese people will just grab on to this as an excuse not to bother exercising as it "won't work for me"

I don't like the DM myself, and wouldn't buy it. But I suspect this article is closer to the truth than we are told to think.

Apart from trace vitamins and minerals we only really eat three things: protein, sugars, and fat. Quickly they become amino acids, sugars, and fatty acids; our bodies then do their best with them. Two of these are the building blocks of us ourselves. The insulin reaction to sugars is one of the many, many other processes that happen. That particular reaction saves you from death by reducing blood sugar levels- storing them in fat cells. We get fat.

If you don't like biology, take another perspective: we learned to grow crops to make our cattle bigger and fatter. After supply exceeded demand we developed human foodstuffs such as breakfast cereals. And we, too, are getting bigger and fatter. See a pattern?

I'm not denying that calories in vs. out isn't the major effect in us all getting fat, or claiming that exercise is useless. But the article isn't wrong to talk about the role of sugars (starch, in this context) in all this.

Nice list I'm No Superhero. biggrin

I dont believe people are eating less calories and excercising more.

I think people eat between meals more and spend less time walking, DIYing, gardening, houseworking and switching over the TVing.

Having read that article I think there may be some truth in some of it, especially if you define exercise as 60-90 minutes of 'light' exercise per day. That is not going to get you to lose weight - ever!

The trouble is, people do a bit of exercise and then think "Oh, I've just earned myself a chocolate bar" biggrin

If you eat just what you need AND do the exercise, you may just stay thin - if you started out thin in the first place! However, if you are already overweight you are going to need to do one heck of a lot more than an hour walking a dog every day to actually LOSE weight...

I call BS. I cycle for 30 miles every day. It burns 1000 extra calories. If I eat normal sized portions of things and drop out my "between meals" meals I can easily lose a few KG per week.

She's not telling the truth about either:
1. The amount of exercise.
2. The amount of food.

I suspect it's the amount of food... And the run is probably a short walk.

Well, there are some truths in the article - reducing fat and replacing it with sugar isn't going to make you lose weight. But did anyone think it would?

And 60 minutes of "light exercise" makes no difference. Correct. You're not doing anything unless your heart rate is 60-80% of your max heart rate, so being advised to go for a stroll every day to lose weight is utter bks. But when has anyone seriously thought otherwise unless they're a fatty looking for excuses.

I prefer to look at these things as a physicist. If you consume more energy than you expend you will either gain weight or piss/crap it out. If you consume less energy than you expend, you will find it from somewhere else, i.e. your reserves. If your reserves run out you will die.

No need for any complex nutritional mumbo-jumbo, it's really quite simple.

Confused a bit here - if you had two (for the purposes of this example) 100% identical people.

Eating precisely the same meals, doing precisely the same activities.

Only difference, one goes for a stroll every day.

They will both remain an identical weight? Surely by the logic of calories in and calories out, ANY exercise burns calories. It has to, otherwise where is the energy coming from?

Did she mention that she ran from the cake shop in the station to the platform to catch her train, where she then ate the cakes (they don't count unless it is eaten in the home....)..

I say this as someone who (as many train commuters will agree) has seen the same woman every day for about 2 weeks last summer, each night stuffing her face with a snickers bar or similar, then calling her husband to explain she'd only had two apples and a bowl of cereal all day... I was so, so, so tempted to shout out as she was on the 'phone that she was a lying cow who'd just eaten a snickers....
