One of BMW's finest and generally one of the best built cars ever made.
They still look good, especially in Sport trim (nice bumpers and side trim).
Running costs vary a fair bit depending on engine but the best option is probably a 525i Sport for performance and economy if you want a petrol model.I
If you have a bit more to spend, a 530 diesel is a terrific car.
Running costs aren't bad at all - they are very reliable so don't need much between servicing.
Use a good indie instead of a main dealer of course to reduce costs.
Spares are quite cheap if you use places like GSF or Euro Carparts.

I had an earlier 520 saloon which was fine...I didnt find it underpowered, suited what I needed at the time....it was written off unfortunately by a blinking corsa!!!
Currently I've got a 540 touring which will be sold in a few weeks to release some funds and whereas I was peeved at being without a BM while the insurance sorted the 520 out, I will sorely miss the 540 because it is IMO phenominal.
Agree with the above to buy on history and condition is you're not set on 1 particular model.

What about 540i vs 530i?
The 530 is I6, the 540 is V8, 230 BHP versus 280 BHP.Both are 155 mph chariots and the vast majority sold
are automatics.
Expect the V8 to cost about 7 mpg more and maybe one
insurance group.
Some posters on here have claimed that the V8 will
do 30 mpg, but that's probably only the very few manuals
and if you drive it like a pensioner to keep the revs
under 2000 rpm.
25 mpg is probably more realistic from the 540.
For the 530, you merely have to drive at legal speeds
to see 30 mpg. Any even mild use of the loud pedal will see
27 mpg and continued runs over 120 mph using brick
on the pedal technology will see 25 mpg.
Servicing costs are reasonably similar, considering
the two extra cylinders. Real serious extra costs only
arrive with the M5, since it has many M5-only parts.
I had three of them 528i 5 spd, 540i 6 spd, and an M5. I much prefer them to the 60 that followed I had no particular problem with them, thought 528 suffered from a gearbox failure very in its life (warranty) and the 540 had an a/c solenoid go, (warranty also). There is a significant performance difference with the 540 over the 6 cylinder car. Its certainly harder on fuel, though I never really measured it.
