Santa Pod Racers Club and APIRA, who set the event entry fees for racers, are completely unconnected with Santa Pod Raceway and so what SPR do about spectator entry fees has no bearing at all on racers' entry fees.Eurodragster Tog said:

Now i have always supported Santa Pod Raceway and will continue to do so, this being my 33rd year of being invovled with drag racing. this year i will again be running TWO racecars at various events both here and possibly in europe.
I am not aware of you or your name and you are certainly of no relevance or importance to me so please try to stay positive on this topic or go away!!!
I am aware that such items as entry fees are discussed by the relevent parties but a little healthy debate does not hurt. Also the items such as entry fees are actully discussed prior to the drivers and riders meeting , it is up to interested parties to let the commitee know that there is an interest in the capping of entry fees.THIS IS WHAT I DID LAST YEAR, SPEAKING TO BOTH DARREN PRENTICE AND PAULA MARSHALL PRIOR TO THE DRIVERS AND RIDERS MEETING. That is a very good point, and I would imagine that APIRA and SPRC wish that more racers would take as active an interest as you do, but be fair your original posting was appearing to connect SPR spectators' entry fees with SPR and APIRA racers' entry fees when the two are completely independent. It all lit off here on PH a few months ago over that very subject even though at the time it was explained to the (ir)responsible poster more than once in words of one syllable.Whether there should be such a connection is an interesting subject for discussion. What is certain is that APIRA and SPRC still put up prize money in 2009 even though racer entry fees were frozen at 2008 levels, and that SPR continue to manage facility improvements even when freezing spectator entry fees and still allowing kids in free.
Fair comment Tog,but that does not excuse the crap approach by certain individuals, we should applaud sprc for the excellent venue and general running of the events they put on, anyway hopefully all is clear now, should anyone feel the need for one syllable discussion then please fell free to visit me in my pit area this year;) Andrew

Hi andrew,been following this with interest,so that we all know,,including me,how much is it to enter a vehicle,jon best pays for all that so i dont know how much ????also perhaps we could do a little maths here ,if the entry is 300 vehicles and the entry is 50 quid thats 15,000 spondoolies ,and i bet the entry fee is nearer a 100 quid ,and thats 30,000 quid,also am i correct in thinking that if you enter a junior as well as your racecar its the same money for both vehicles but you dont get a pitspace for the junior,not chitstirring but it all seems a lot of dosh ,on the upside its always impressed me that if you enter and then realise you cant go ,and tell them in time the entry is rolled to another meeting,,,oh and who is the mighty chap ,had a look and apart from an artwork company ,,,very nice,,,i have no idea who he /she is ,,,,personally i have never hidden behind an alias ,,,yours Edmund K Goatstrangler
Have read this with interest, and not one to usually reply to potentially political threads but here goes. I am assuming that SPR have frozen spectator entry fees this year possibly because of the economic downturn (just a hunch) raise them and fewer people would go because of finances, lower them and you could be comitting financial suicide as you may not get any more people to attend.
Now with the racers fees, bear in mind that Drag Racing still is one of the 'cheaper forms' of Motorsport to enter. Now this could all have changed but I know when Terry (my father) was promoting the Super Series events at Shakey, that most if not all of the entry money from racers went back to the racers. Now that doesn't necessarily mean just by monetry renumeration i.e prize fund, but also to fund things like the ambulance service, track prep etc...admin..event permits...and so on. Again this could all have changed, but the Clubs revenue came from the entry fee's, and although some officials do it for the love of the sport, there are also overheads that have to be covered, even simple things like envelopes and stamps, all have to be encountered for. So remember when doing the maths, to take into account all of the things that perhaps you may not be aware of, but still have to be accounted for, just like running a business. Sure at some point there will come a time when there is money in the pot, but then just like a business it needs to be profitable, otherwise there is no point in doing it (other than for the love of the sport).
When Terry was running the Super Series events, his revenue came almost purely from the spectator entry fees, and it was this that he used to fund things such as the fuel car match ups etc...that we used to see there.
So from a personal point of view, I would like to thank SPR, SPRC and APIRA for continueing to give us one of the cheapest forms of Motorsport to enter, providing us with cracking facilities, and professionally run events, and to say keep up the sometimes un-rewarded great work that you do.
And remember, it is a free country with supposedly freedom of speech, we should never put any one down for wanting to have their opinion on any matter that relates to the subject we all love the most.

When you like at it like that, you realise what a good deal it is. Lets face it if anyone tells you they do drag racing for the money (apart from the pro teams of course) then they would be lying. For me it's the pure adrenaline rush you get when you let go of the clutch pedal at 6500 rpm. When you consider a track day at a reasonable circuit would cost you anywhere between £100 - £150 per day, it suddenly looks great value for money for a two, three and four day event, even more so when you consider that you get not only your ticket but your crew's as well, and - even power for the event. Personally I think we should all keep quiet in case they realise ssshhhhhh.......

Having seen some of the financials for the pro side of the sport, I can assure you that they're not doing it for the money either. Even on the other side of the pond, I suspect few outside the big names are able to do it for the money.Am i correct in thinking that a percentage of that goes back as prise money directly to the racers???when i was in the states with Paul Marston we investigated this and found that there were meets where say the car was 120 bucks entry plus extra for crew mwmbers but up to 50%was returned as prize money,this was local jap import stuff plus an nhra points meet i think,,,could have it up my arse sideways ,but no one reads this anyway.......Yours.....Edmund K Goatstrangler
a huge chuck of the entry fees go towards insurance. More so than before now as litigation has meant that anyone can sue anyone..
It's cheap entry in comparison to any "roundy roundy" racing.
Our applause is needed to all the guys/gals involved in keeping our hobby alive in trying times.

To be honest, even though I'd personally like the entrance fees to stay at the same level, does it really matter? It's still a comparatively cheap sport, and even if they put fees up by 30 quid or so (around an unlikely 25% increase for most of us), that's still only an extra 210 quid over a year if you do every championship round. If that's really enough to make a significant difference then you should probably be packing your car/bike away for a year or two and sorting your finances out, rather than blowing your last few pennies on racing. I know we all like to race, and we probably all end up spending more than we intended (I certainly have, and most other racers I've spoken to seem to be the same), but when it's either race or pay the mortgage/feed the family, it shouldn't be a hard choice.
