Fuel tank sender unit

Hi Guys,

Getting through the mountain of jobs to complete,the next problem is the fuel sender unit i've taken this picture off a previous thread posted in sept 2009


First thing i'll say is that i,ve only got 2 gallons in my tank at present even with this small amount i would have thought you would have got some reading from the gauge.

I have 6v at the green and black cable which is also present at the back of the gauge where it gets it feed from.Putting this cable directly to earth you get FSD at the gauge.

The black wire is connected to earth somewhere as i.m getting continuity through the chassis.

I would have suspected some sort of resistance reading between the center terminal and the spade terminal on the tank but i'm getting nothing.Does this point to a faulty sender unit with an open circuit variable resister?

I have a problem with my sender also, it only reads when 1/4 empty, have taken it out of the tank, which is very easy.

So i suggest you do the same, then you can examine the coil pickup for wear, and also try moving the float arm through its range, to see what it can display.

Thanks for the excellent picture Norm such clarity!

Hoping to try it today when the baby is awake and most of the neighbors are too!

Had to change the pipe from the fuel tank to the pump,the previous owner had put heater hose as a replacement for the fuel hose and also had airleaks around that 90 degree fuel baffle thingy to the fuel pump.This caused the pump to draw air so no fuel was drawing through the system.

All is well now I have fuel to the rail and the press reg is releasing at 3 bar back to the tank.

Lets turn the key!!

"official" factory details regarding the three types of fuel sender fitted. Only the lower one is now available from TVR car parts IIRC.

As tvrJohn suggests, I would take the sender unit out and clean. When I took mine out when I was cleaning and treating the tank, there was some of the cr*p that was blocking my filter also wrapped around the sender mechanism.

I've just finished refitting my fuel tank having had it blasted and powder coated, I too have exactly two gallons in it and I have no reading at the gauge at all, I just put this down to an idiosyncrysy of the car.

hi if its any help i bought a new one from tvr car parts and that one read empty with 2 gallons in the tank, you can bend the arm to correct it but i left mine as a precaution against running out
